Some News for Wed Mar 31, 2010

STARTERS

Were the MLS referees all headed out to fill pot holes on freeways after their games last weekend? Or are they all moonlighting as bike messengers? What is up with those uniforms having bright yellow (nearly reflective) strips? (Can someone out there help me find an image of this gruesome attire?)

dN

A fantastic video from MLS recapping opening night in Seattle.

dN

Rob Hughes of the International Herald Tribune examines Tuesday's wins by Bayern (shocking) and Lyon (not as easy as the scoreline.)

dN

Man United striker extraordinaire Wayne Rooney hobbled off the field in the dying seconds as Bayern celebrated the winning goal. He had jacked his right ankle over pretty badly just landing wrong on the ground. Damn that looked painful.
-They say its not real bad, and he will be back in 2 weeks. But.... he is practically the whole team at Manchester United as far as I am concerned, and without him they will have to step up big time to stay in the hunt for 2 titles.
-And the entire country of England has now been put on suicide watch.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

All 4 teams are from Mexico again this year.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Seattle announcer Arlo White on his style of calling games: "I’ve always remembered that: It only takes a second [to score a goal]. If listeners hear the crowd roar because a goal has been scored, I don’t be want to be preoccupied because I’m telling tales."
-Are all you broadcasters out there reading this and taking it in. Sometimes its best to shut up and pay attention.
-The Tacoma New Tribune with a profile on White.

STORY OF THE DAY

Mark Zeigler of the San Diego Union Tribune asks all the right questions about the quality of our USA team.
-I think this team has a huge mental hole when it comes to concentration at key points in the game. Yes, they are also very resilient, but much of that wouldn't be needed if so many other mistakes were not made.

TWITTERVERSE/FACEBOOKING

@cway1979: "This just in: Ben's Chili Bowl to have a stand at RFK this year."

MLS TEAM & PLAYER NEWS

To no ones surprise Javier Morales of Real Salt Lake was named MLS Player Of The Week.

dN

Jack Bell of the NY Times does a "getting to know you" Q & A with Red Bulls coach Hans Backe, which Bells informs us is pronounced BAH-kuh.

dN

The Red Bulls have given long time assistant coach Richie Williams a contract extension. Good for him, he's earned it.

dN

Daniel Girard of the Toronto Star feels that TFC needs this week off to continue building their squad for the long season ahead.

dN

The Toronto Sun feels that with the MLS Cup coming to their city this fall then TFC really needs to up their game this season to at least avoid embarrassment.

dN

The Sun shows their love for Don Garber, for no further reason than he shows Canada respect. Unlike other big sports league commissioners.

dN

Sam Stejskal of Chicago Now tells us that Fire midfielder John Thorrington is out due to a hamstring injury he suffered in preseason.

dN

Sorry I missed this a few days ago - Kyle McCarthy of Goal.com with his Monday Breakdown.

dN

Last Thursday night David Myrie (I know, who?) started at right fullback for Philadelphia. Yesterday he was cut from the team. My how things change.

dN

Luis Bueno of the Press Enterprise feels the LA-Chivas rivalry is still not really there yet. Well, compared to ones that have been round for a long time, its not possible, but otherwise, I sure feel it from out here.

dN

Michael C Lewis of the Salt Lake Tribune looks at RSL's next road challenge - Houston! On Thursday night.

dN

Michael Black of the Deseret News writes about RSL's defense - they will carry the team this season.

Nick Green of the Daily Breeze looks at the Galaxy's three young Brazilian players who all had a role in the season opener.

dN

The Houston Chronicle with some Dynamo team notes.
-And a few more players notes on injuries etc.

PETER NOWAK V FREDDIE LJUNGBERG

Richard Snowden of Soccer 365 is not a fan of MLS referee's letting the action get extra rough.
-And a huge THANK YOU to Snowden for pointing out the hideous ankle stomp that Jeff Larentowicz put on Michael Lahoud with referee Michael Kennedy staring right at, and doing nothing. NOTHING! Lahoud is lucky his ankle was not broken!

Don Ruiz of the Olympian on Seattle forward Freddie Ljungberg's back injury, and retorts to Philly coach Peter Nowak.
-While I have sympathy for Ljungberg on this injury, his does so much diving and complaining that I think referee's get sick of it and look the other way.

Joshua Mayers of the Seattle Times on Freddie Ljungberg's back.

Jonathan Tannenwald of Philly.com goes back and rewatches the Union's first ever game and gives us a review. Very good reading.
-Here is what Tannenwald had to say about the foul on Ljungberg that has caused this back and forth: "The second card was on Toni Stahl for his tackle on Freddy Ljungberg. Peter Nowak thought it was a flop, and when I first saw it I thought the foul was called on Dave Myrie for creating more contact coming in from the front. It looked on the replay like Stahl came in from behind and at most clipped Ljungberg's heel. But Myrie then came in and basically tackled Stahl instead of Ljungberg, and Stahl pushed Ljungberg as they both fell over. I don't think it was a dive by Ljungberg, but I wouldn't have booked Stahl on the play."

MLS RUMORS

Is Danny Szetela going to get a look from Philadelphia. He surely has the talent, but obviously not the attitude for all the teams who have cut him loose at such a young age.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

American striker Herculez Gomez who plays for Puebla in Mexico talk to Greg Seltzer of Soccer365: "There are two questions that I get the most. What are the differences in the leagues [Primera & MLS]? And then people in the States ask what it's like down here, and the people here ask what it's like to live in the States. The players down here are fascinated with MLS, fascinated with American culture. A lot of those guys would really like to test the waters in MLS." But.....

6 teams are off this weekend! WHY????

MY THOUGHTS

Two more things from my weekend road trip to Kansas City that I forgot to mention yesterday:

1. I thought KC's new left winger Ryan Smith had himself a great debut. He was smooth, quick, direct and fearless. And he got himself a goal. I loved his performance.

2. On the way back north we stopped by the memorial to Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & The Big Bopper in Clear Lake Iowa where their plane crash and killed them and the pilot on Feb 3 1959.

WHO KNEW?

Marvell Wynne has all the athletic tributes in the world, but appeared to be not developing as a soccer player in his spot at right fullback or midfield for Toronto despite them giving him 3 full seasons to get it right. Finally they ship him out to Colorado. So Wynne arrives on Friday in Denver, does not train with his new team, get stuffed into the starting line up as a CENTER BACK due to injuries etc, and what happens??? He has a terrific game. What is going on?

QUOTES OF THE DAY

Sure to royally piss off Toronto FC players and fans, giving them fuel for the return leg, Columbus' Guillermo Barros Schelotto on his team's 2-0 win on Saturday: "For us, it was very easy."

dN

Comment left by Cannon Girl at Center Line Soccer after article on San Jose acquiring goalkeeper Jon Busch: "...if this acquisition results in Busch as starting goalkeeper and [Joe] Cannon as head coach then I’m all for it."

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Dave Van Den Bergh is teamless right now, but was in New York last weekend and dispelled all those rumors that I never believed in the first place that claimed he forced his way out of the Red Bull team and into Dallas. Quote DVDB: "I didn't want to leave here in the first place." End of story. Now will someone just sign him already. He is a great player still.

FACT OF THE DAY

Infamous American soccer critic Bill Archer of Big Soccer gives us a pretty amazing fact:
What do these current MLS head coaches all have in common?
Dominick Kinnear - Houston
Jason Kreis - Salt Lake
Curt Onalfo - DC
Preki - Toronto
Martin Vasquez - Chivas
Peter Vermes - Kansas City
Robert Warzycha - Columbus
Frank Yallop - San Jose

They were all players in the MLS inaugural season of 1996!

-And I noticed that current Los Angeles head coach Bruce Arena was the head coach at DC United in 1996, while head coach Peter Nowak of Philadelphia came into MLS in Chicago's inaugural season of 1998.

THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

Hey FIRE fans - a Damani Ralph siting. Via Big Apple Soccer.

WHY?

Why are 6 teams off on Week 2 of the MLS season? Columbus, Dallas, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Salt Lake & Toronto don't play, for no apparent reason.

6 teams are off this weekend! WHY????

MLS INJURY REPORT

MY THOUGHTS

Here was my first Twitter message for today: Epic weekend in KC: Roadtrip, BBQ, KC Wiz demolish DC U, UFC-GSP, Late Night Party!, Biscuits N Gravy, The Clash, LMAO, Very Happy!

Yeah, 16 of us from the Twin Cities road-tripped down I-35 for the MLS season opener in Kansas City. And none of us are KC fans. Or DC fans either.
That makes it 7 years in a row for me at the Zards home opener. And it always treats me right.
When you leave my city at this time of year, everything is brown and dead, but when you step out of your car 6 hours south of here, the grass is green and the trees are budding. It’s joyful. I know that reads as pretty corny coming from me, but it’s a real sentiment.
The absolute best thing in KC is their Bar-B-Que. Many great choices: Arthur Bryants is an old favorite of mine, but lately its all about Oklahoma Joes. Nothing beats BBQ from a gas station!
It's pretty fun going to the games in KC these days too. Sure the place is a bit odd, with a minor league baseball park being called home for a soccer team, not to mention the fact that it is a good 10 miles west of the KC suburbs out in the country. strangely you are plopped right in the middle of this weird modern outdoor shopping mall area. A vast sprawling shopping-eating complex, that also includes a big old NASCAR track. All the worst restaurants in the world are within walking distance - Olive Garden, Applebees, Hooters, you name it. And still I love it.
(In full disclosure we ended up at Applebees after the game so that I could watch the UFC title fight between George St Pierre and Dan Hardy. No one joint in the whole area was showing the fight. And I understand where this might just make you think that I am exactly like the meatheads I rail against. Yes I have faults. Enough though.)
The game was a lot of fun. For 3 years in a row I have gotten tickets on the West end behind the goal. I would prefer something in the middle, but there are very few seats anywhere close to the field so we make due. We saw goals galore, but all from the Wizards, leaving the mighty DC smelling just plain rotten. The worst I have ever seen them in person. So bad that we sang a little ditty to former the former KC coach who is now in charge of DC:
Curt Onalfo
Rhymes With Awful
Old Falafel
Curt Onalfo
Yes, I can see where that might come across as odd/dumb to you, but believe me it made perfect sense at the time. On the other hand we also laid out this one on the unsuspecting good people of KC: "Give me an E. Give me a B. Give me an O. Give me an L. Give me an A. What's that spell? EBOLA! What? EBOLA! What? EBOLA."
And we can't go to a game without a rousing rendition of "Stand Up If You Hate Milwaukee!" One guy in our section eventually stood!
The rain never bothered us either, and a few minutes into the game it stopped completely, making it a nearly perfect night out.
Did I mention that DC really stunk? They had the first chance to score, right in front of us, and the usually unshakable Jaime Moreno shot it right at the KC keeper – Danish Billy Idol! (Who flexed for the crowd after the win!)
Minnesota's own Teal Bunbury made a late game cameo for the winners. Nice for him.
That last KC goal, a PK, was a complete joke, as Dejan Jakovic was called for handball, but he was literally being headlocked to death by Kei Kamara when his arm hit the ball. We all figured the ref was calling the foul against KC when the whistle went, and even the Wiz players seemed a bit sheepish accepting the free goal that was coming.
The rest of the night continued to just get louder and crazier for all of us, and thankfully we had enough rooms in the hotel all together to buffer us from the other guests, cuz we didn’t hold back until quite late! Yes!
The next morning we went to church of course, then had a huge southern style breakfast to pack our bellies for the drive back north.
It was a completely glorious 36 hours!
I want to say thanks a ton to Sam Perron of the KC Wiz Futebol Clube for setting up the tickets, and coming by to shares some one liners with us!
And finally, I must say it was great to see my Friend In Football and occasional du Nord contributor Graham Fox before the game. He was sporting a heroic blue cowboy hat, and a big beard. Nice!
Until next year!

My Thoughts:
It was a pretty ugly start for Philadelphia last night, and a phantom foul and dive by Freddie Ljungberg led to a Yellow Card which in turn led to a first half Red Card against Philly, which sunk the whole ship. But that is not to excuse Philly's goon tactics on defense. Yes first year pro Finnish centerback Toni Stahl more than earned his 2nd card, and doing it while already being on one card makes him an idiot. The Union also showed that they have little to no offense last night. Honestly, who is going to score any goals for them? I will not judge it all on one game, but they are not going to be one of the good expansion teams, they will be one of the strugglers.
As for the home team, Seattle looked pretty much just like they did last year too. Not surprising seeing the few changes to their roster. Their big need is more offense, and they have not addressed that issue yet. Incredible goal by Fredy Montero to seal the game. Who doesn't love a diving header! Their defense is rock solid again, and I expect nothing else from a Sir Sigmund Schmid team.

MLS TEAM & PLAYER NEWS

One of the strangest things I have seen as this season starts is that Chivas USA and new head coach Martin Vasquez have barely touched last years roster in preparin for the new campaign. Nearly 100% of the time you see a new head coach come in and toss the whole roster out the window, then get the time needed to make it gel. Not so with this team, and is that the answer?
