USA Women Win Group + Women's Quarterfinal Previews

Written by du Nord reader Adam.

USA 4-0 New Zealand

After an uninspiring 4-0 rout of New Zealand, and thanks to some help from Japan, the US finished atop group G and will now play Canada in the Olympic quarterfinals.

Heather O’Reilly opened the scoring 43 seconds into the match with the fastest goal in women’s Olympic soccer history, after lofting a shot from distance over New Zealand keeper Jenny Bindon.

The goal clearly came as a blow to New Zealand’s hopes of springing an upset over the US. The Kiwis never seemed to get into the match after that first goal; still, the US did not look as dominant as the final score suggests.

Throughout the first half, lame defense and poor passing continued to plague the US. Fortunately, New Zealand failed to create dangerous scoring opportunities and capitalize on the USA’s mistakes. Just before halftime, in another knock to New Zealand’s hope for a comeback, Rachel Buehler’s long pass freed Amy Rodriguez behind the defense. Rodriguez calmly cracked a first-time shot past Bindon inside the far post.

Ten minutes after the break, Rodriguez got in 1-v-1 against Bindon, but the keeper blocked her shot. The ball rebounded to Angela Hucles, whose pass found a sprinting O’Reilly inside the box. O’Reilly’s effort deflected off a New Zealand player, but Lindsay Tarpley followed up, placing her volley into the open net for her team’s third goal.

Lori Chalupny, playing in her first match since the opening game, deserves most of the credit for the final US goal. Chalupny dribbled past two defenders at the top of the New Zealand box and smacked a right-footed shot off the crossbar. The ball landed at the feet of Hucles, who lofted a shot that slipped through Bindon’s fingers.

After USA’s first two low-scoring games, it was refreshing to see four different players score. The problem is, those four goals weren’t the result of intelligent passing sequences or lengthy US possession. With the Americans still struggling to gel and find rhythm, the team might find that spurts of good play are not good enough in the knock-out stages of the tournament.

QUARTERFINAL PREVIEWS:
(All matches played on Fri Aug 15)

USA v Canada

The US has won all four encounters with the Canadians this year, two games were blow-outs and two were close. Depending on which team Canada brings to this quarterfinal, the game has the potential to be a close, physical encounter. Christine Sinclair is Canada’s version of Abby Wambach, and Kara Lang can also pounce on the mistakes the US has been making in the defensive end of the field.

If the US plays cohesively and can string more than three passes together, they might find their way into the semifinals. But, Canada is more than capable of beating an out of sync US squad.

China v Japan

In June of this year, China beat Japan, 3-1, and has historically owned the Japanese. But the Chinese must be on edge after seeing Japan dismantle Norway 5-1. Both teams play a similar style, but Japan has been doing it better so far in the Olympics.

China might have home field advantage, but it didn’t help the team last summer in the World Cup. If Japan finishes its opportunities like it did against Norway, it’ll prove home field advantage doesn’t matter this year either.

Sweden v Germany

With only two goals in the tournament so far, Germany has yet to find its usual offensive flair. On defense, though, the Germans are the same old team. Led by keeper Nadine Angerer, the German’s didn’t allow one goal in last summer’s World Cup and have yet to concede one in the Olympics. Sweden’s Lotta Schelin, who has three goals for her team in the tournament, will be the biggest threat for the Swedes. Captain Victoria Svensson must also have an excellent game if Sweden hopes to upset the Germany.

Norway v Brazil

Brazil came out on top of the group of death, thanks to its two stars, Marta and Cristiane. Cristiane scored three goals against Nigeria in Brazil’s final group game. Marta has yet to find her form in the tournament, mainly because defenses aren’t giving her any space at all. It will be no different against Norway.

The Scandinavians, who tumbled out of first place after Japan scored 5 goals against them, looked lost in their final group game. Keeper Erika Scarboe cannot afford to have a meltdown against Brazil, or she might end up letting 5 goals in again.

If Norway beat Brazil, it’ll be considered an upset. But Norway, still stinging from the lopsided loss to Japan, could have perfect motivation to find the form that saw them handily beat the US in the group stage. Anything’s possible if Norway captain Ane Stangeland Horpestad can keep the backline compact against Brazil’s flamboyant offense.

Cry For The Late Change News

I want to go back over some things I wrote yesterday about the dismissal of Alexi Lalas by Los Angeles. I said only negative things. But he deserves a ton of credit for being one of the biggest supporters of soccer in American and MLS in particular. He has a voice and knows how to use it. The Press love to talk to him, and he never lets us down. For that reason alone I hope he is a big part of this league for a long long time. Thank you Alexi, and best of luck.

My notes from the USA v Netherlands game:
-Like I predicted the USA started the same 11 players from game 1.
-Neth dominated the first 15 minutes and got the goal they deserved.
-At that point I thought the USA was going to get blown out. It was a serious ass kicking.
-But the next 5 minutes were very even, and after minute 20 or so the USA began to dominate every facet of the game.
-The second half started even better for the USA and they got 2 great goals that came from hard teamwork. Holland had no answers at that point.
-Then two players took stupid Yellow Cards, Freddy Adu & Michael Bradley, that will suspend them from the Nigeria game.
-The TV commentator Marcelo Balboa was busy declaring the game over, the USA advanced and the 2 yellow cards irrelevant. What a bad omen all of that was. I thought he was former pro who knows better than any of this crap.
-As the final minutes approached the Dutch began lumping the ball forward into their offensive end, but it was never dangerous.
-The bad part at this point though was that the USA was not holding the ball at all. They would easily clear their lines, but then give it right back to the Netherpeople.
-It started to smell all wrong.
-The referee gave 4 minutes of stoppage time.
-We survived 3 minutes with minor threat(!).
-Then with the final 60 seconds going down the drain our defender converged on a Dutch player and hacked him to the ground right at the top of the box.
-I could not believe it.
-Gerald Sibon lined up to take it, then put it low under the wall leaving Guzan with no chance to stop it, and with only a few seconds left to play the USA had thrown 2 points and advancement to our 2 out the window.
-I was furious.
-And Marcelo Balboa sent me over the edge by saying the USA wall did exactly what they were supposed to do - jump. Are you kidding me? That is the first time I have ever heard someone say that who is supposed to know what they are talking about. I was always taught that from that range the fall holds their ground and if the guy can get the shot up over the wall and back down into the net then more power to them. But never ever jump when you are that close to goal.
-It turns out that 5 of the 6 guys in the wall did what they were supposed to do, and one guy did what Balboa said you should do. Guess which guy was responsible for the whole in the wall where the shot went through. Yeah.
-Game over. 1 point instead of 3. Two key players suspended for a do or die game against Nigeria.

USA needs a tie or win over Nigeria to guarantee advancement.

USL First Division News

Minnesota Thunder

Another quality win from our local team on Sunday night. They went down early to defending league champs Seattle, but then they stormed back with a serious hiding. Seattle came in all cocky and anticipating their Open Cup game on Tuesday and ended up getting their teeth knocked out. It was great to see our team with that much fire and quality. For once in a long while we all went home very happy. You could see the relief in the faces of the players.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~

During the game us Thunder fans spotted Seattle owner Adrian Hanouer sitting near his teams bench, so we sang him a couple of ditties about being the league whipping boys next year in MLS. We later found out that he was flying his team on his private jet to Charleston so they would be well rested for the Open Cup semifinal.

Graham Jones of the LA Times with the story that comes as no surprise to anyone.

LA Galaxy owners AEG fired both team president/general manager Alexi Lalas and head coach Ruud Gullit today.

The dead give away came when Gullit put his house up for sale last week, then claimed his "wife just didn't really like the place". Honestly, do you expect me to believe that you spent over $4million on a house that a few months later you decided you didn't like. Please.

Assistant coach Cobi Jones has been named interim head coach. And assistant general manager Tom Payne has been named interim president/general manager.

US Women Improve Against Japan In Match 2

USA Women Olympic Match Report from du Nord reader Adam.

Group Stage Match 2
Sat Aug 9
USA 1-0 Japan

When four minutes had ticked by in the match between the United States and Japan, US players and fans had to be relieved: the US wasn’t two goals down. In contrast to the mess of a team that came out against Norway, the Americans looked more aggressive and confident.

Determined to put the Japanese on their heels early, it only took eight minutes for the US to create a dangerous scoring opportunity. Heather O’Reilly sent a low ball across the face of Japan’s goal that defender Yukari Kinga had to knock out for a corner. Seconds later, Lindsay Tarpley forced keeper Miho Fukumoto to make a diving save.

Japan soon settled into the match, though, and exposed the US’ lax defense. After a series of beautiful passing sequences in and around the US box, Kinga’s low shot almost snuck into the back post. Japan’s playmaker Homare Sawa also found herself free in the US box, but her dipping shot was tipped over the bar by Hope Solo.

Finally, in the 26th minute, Carli Lloyd broke the deadlock. Lindsay Tarpley played a quick pass up the left flank to Stephanie Cox. Cox’s cross skipped past a couple defenders to the top of Japan’s box, and Lloyd cracked her volley into the top of the net.

The US certainly showed moments of promise, but the match was still not a complete performance from the team. The defense allowed Japan too much space and time in and around the US box. Japan’s quick, incisive passing looked threatening and seemed to catch the US defenders off-guard on numerous occasions. Heather Mitts played the best game of the back four; she was in position to make tackles on defense and had two good looks at goal. Her work with Heather O’Reilly on the right side of the field gave the Japanese fits throughout the game.

Amy Rodriguez also had a good performance, starting in place of Natasha Kai. Rodriguez did well to get behind the Japanese defense throughout the game and had at least four good chances to pad the USA’s lead. She didn’t score, but the speedster looked more dangerous than Kai ever did against Norway. And, at only 20 years old, Rodriguez showed she’ll be a future star for team USA. If she can gain confidence in front of goal, the US might have found the scoring threat it needs right now.

Next Match

The US faces a scrappy, athletic New Zealand side in its final group match. Considered the weakest team in the group, New Zealand is looking to spring an upset and qualify for the next round. The US cannot lose if it hopes to make the quarterfinals.
If the US continues to improve its play, it should have the upper hand against the New Zealanders.

From the Oregonian: "The funeral procession marking the end of the Portland Timbers-Seattle Sounders rivalry started early Thursday evening. Beginning next year, Seattle will have a Major League Soccer team. So almost a half-hour before kickoff, a coffin painted in Timbers green and white wound its way down the center of the Timbers Army fan group in the north end of PGE Park. When the coffin reached the bottom row, the lid opened. To the delight of fans, out popped a stuffed orca whale in blue and white Sounders colors."

Minnesota Thunder

I'm tellin you man, it was not pretty at all, but our Thunder finally got a little luck and 3 points to boot. In the 2 previous games they went up 2-0 only to see them lose one 2-3 and draw the other 2-2. Last night they went up 1-0 when they played magnificently, moving the ball from side to side with great pace that tore the Charleston defense to shreds leaving Ricardo Sanchez wide open at the back post to hammer a shot home. The two teams played even for the next 30 minutes, until once again our team went into a hunker/bunker mode. But there were still 5 minutes to play in the FIRST half! From the opening whistle in the 2nd half Charleston charged toward the Thunder goal. Former Minnesota forward Darren Spicer twice hit the post and they finally got the equalizer. But our boys never gave up and charged back to gain a Penalty on a handball, which Alen Marcina finished in the 82nd minute to win the game. Charleston also proved very adept and throwing cheap shots behind the referees back. Nice. At least we got a little relief now. A home win over Seattle on Sunday is almost necessary to get us into serious play off contention. And if the playoffs started today the Thunder would claim that last spot. Let's hope.

Soccer In America

I have heard lots of reasons why Barcelona did not draw massive crowds in its two games in the USA this past week. All reasons given are wrong. There is only one reason whey they did not draw huge crowds - no more Ronaldinho. He was the team for most fans in this country, regardless of their racial heritage. And that is precisely why MLS should have dropped the big bucks and gotten him in here. Now let's see if they are at least smart enough to book Milan for next summer.
