USA Ties North Korea In World Cup Opener

Post-game analysis from du Nord reader Adam on the USA v North Korea match.

Group Stage Match 1:
USA 2-2 North Korea

Right from the first whistle in today’s US-North Korea match, both teams played at a frenetic pace that made yesterday’s 11-0 snoozer between Germany and Argentina look like a high school game.

A confident North Korean side, who finally lived up to pre-tournament hype that they are a contender to take the crown, kept the United States under constant pressure with their penetrating passing sequences and dangerous long-range attempts on goal. Though the US edged the Koreans in shots, 21 to 18, it was Korea who held possession for much of the match and dictated the speed of play.

The US, playing in a 4-3-3 formation, clearly lacked strength in the middle of the park. Midfielders Lori Chaulpny, Carli Lloyd, and Shannon Boxx struggled to connect with the US forwards all game long. The American’s best chance to score in the first half came in the 40th minute when Abby Wambach headed a corner kick off the underside of the crossbar. North Korea quickly cleared the ball before Heather O’Reilly could poke it over the goal line.

Five minutes after half time, it appeared the tide was beginning to turn in the USA’s favor. Kristine Lilly found Wambach open at the top of the Korean box. Wambach took a touch and fired a shot that slipped through the hands of goalkeeper Jon Myong-hui.

But the US lead was short lived. After a head-to-head collision caused a bloodied Wambach to leave the field for treatment, North Korea took advantage of being a player up on the Americans. In the 58th minute, Kil Sun-hui found a bit of space at the top of the US box and fired a shot on goal. The ball, slick with rain, slipped through Solo’s hands and into the back of the net. And, 4 minutes later, North Korea’s Kim Yong-ae scored from close range to make it 2-1 after a scramble in front of the US goal.

Wambach finally returned to the field with the wound on the back of her stitched shut. At full strength again, each team continued to attack the other. In the 69th minute, Heather O’Reilly tied the game at 2 apiece, redirecting a poor clearance into the roof of the Korean goal.

In this end-to-end match, Solo was the USA’s best player. Even though she made a dreadful mistake, allowing the ball to slip through her fingers on Korea’s first goal, she still had other great saves, including one on a rocket in stoppage time that looked destined for goal. And credit the US backline: Christie Rampone, Kate Markgraf, Cat Whitehill, and Stephanie Lopez. For much of the game, they were able to absorb North Korea’s attack and keep them from getting opportunities inside the US penalty box.

To the Americans, anything other than a win is a loss. They’ll be itching to erase their performance in the North Korea game with a better effort against Sweden on Friday.

In the other group match, Nigeria pulled off a little upset of their own, pulling a late goal back to tie Sweden 1-1. With both games ending in draws, all four teams in group B are even with one point each.

Just Got Back From Reno Or Somewhere Like It News

I have been traveling all day, so I'll have more facts (scores etc) today than opinions and links. That will just force me to take more time to explore tomorrow. I spent an excellent weekend with friends in Chicago, and took in the exciting USA v Brazil match. If you were there or watched it, did you have fun? I sure did.

USA 2-4 Brazil - USA goals by Carlos Bocanegra & Clint Dempsey. Bra goals by Oguchi Onyewu (Own Goal), Lucio, Ronaldiho & Elano.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~

So here are the du Nord 3 Stars Of The Game:
3. Michael Bradley - played some fantastic hole filling defense. How many slide tackles did he execute to stuff attacks. How many times was he inside the shirt of Kaka & Ronaldiho taking away the ball and frustrating the hell out of them. He would have gotten a higher rating from me except for that mishap known as a terrible foul in the box that gave Brazil the PK & their 4th goal.
2. Clint Dempsey - Worked really hard all game, gave his teammates tons of deft passes in places they could do some thing with while they gave him little or nothing to work with, and his goal was a Dempsey special.
1. Ronaldinho - his passing to set up Kaka which turned into the own goal was amazing, and his free kick to score the winning goal was pure magic.

My notes on the game:
-There was a long break in the second half while the USA medical staff examines goalkeeper Tim Howard. Obviously the fans in the stands have no idea what is going on. I later find out that Tim-may dislocated the ring finger on his left hand, but the medics popped it back in place and off he went.
-The USA has now lost 5 games in a row. What does this mean?
-I only saw one person I knew at the game. That bummed me out. Where was everyone?
-I was in the third row directly behind the southend goal. What a great place to watch any game. You could almost smell the action.
- Clint Dempsey scored his excellent goal right in front of me.
-Robinho was yellow carded for his awful dive right in front of me, although from my angle it looked like a foul. My brother was sitting a couple sections over and said it was a blatant dive!
-Unforutantely Oguchi Onyewu's own goal happened right in front of me too. On the other hand you really can't say that Brazil didn't deserve a goal at that point of the game.

du Nord Women’s World Cup 2007 Preview

By Adam - a faithful and obviously dedicated reader of du Nord.

Group A

-GERMANY Reigning world and European champs Germany appear to have the easiest group on paper. But the team and coach Silvia Neid aren’t taking anything for granted in defense of the title they won four years ago. The Germans are strong and tactically sound at every position and have a deep bench. Twelve of the players on the squad were a part of the championship team in ‘03, including top scorer from that event, Birgit Prinz, and midfielder Renate Lingor. An injury to starting goalkeeper Silke Rottenberg gives backup goalie Nadine Angerer a chance to uphold Germany’s reputation for having a stingy defense.

-ENGLAND Long considered one of the middle-tier teams in Europe, England find themselves in the World Cup for the first time in twelve years. Nine of the players on the squad play together in the Women’s Premier League for championship team Arsenal, and the English boast attacking midfielder Kelly Smith, one of the best players in the women’s game. But can the rest of the team support her? After strong performances against the USA and Germany in a small tournament in January, England are out to prove they can play—and win—against the elite teams in women’s soccer.

-JAPAN After finding themselves in fourth place and out of contention in Asian qualifying for the World Cup, Japan had to defeat Mexico in a home-and-away series to book their ticket to China ‘07. The team relies heavily on midfielder Homare Sawa, who’ll be playing in her fourth World Cup, but with an impressive showing at the ’04 Olympics and a recent win over pre-tournament favorite Brazil in a friendly match, Japan look to improve upon their lackluster performance in qualifying.

-ARGENTINA At the Women’s World Cup four years ago, Argentina lost all three of its first round games, including a 0-6 loss to Japan and a 1-6 loss to Germany. This time around, the team wants to show it’s better than a three-and-out performance. The young squad, led by veteran striker Mariela Coronel and goalkeeper Romina Ferro, are out to prove they’ve tightened up on defense and are more confident in front of goal than they were four years ago.

Verdict: Germany should finish first in the group, but Japan and England are both capable of springing an upset. Be sure to set your TIVO for the match between Japan and England. It’ll be a battle for second place in the group and one of the most exciting matches of the first round. The second place team from this group will most likely face the United States in the quarterfinals.

Group B

-USA Another of the favorites to win it all, the US enters this World Cup riding a 37 game unbeaten streak under head coach Greg Ryan, who took over in 2005. Ryan stresses strong team defense and his players are fit, fast, and adept at playing in multiple different formations. Critics say the team often struggles to score during the run of play, but forwards Abby Wambach and Kristine Lilly look to impose their potent, attacking style of play upon opponents. New players, such as midfielders Carli Lloyd and Lori Chalupny, and goalie Hope Solo, hope to erase any doubt that the US can’t win the cup without the team’s famous stars of the past.

-NORTH KOREA The buzz surrounding North Korea coming into this, their third World Cup, is similar to what it was in ‘99 and ‘03. Many people consider them the best team in Asia and a dark horse to win the cup. But, because the team plays few games outside of their region, they remain enigmatic. In the typical style of Asian women soccer teams, the Koreans rely on speed and agility and play a possession-based passing game. At the youth level, the North Koreans won the U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2006 and are hoping the young players from that squad, coupled with the fact that the team is playing close to home, can help veteran forward Ri Kum Suk make a lasting impression at the full international level.

-SWEDEN Second-place finishers at the ‘03 World Cup, Sweden lost in the final to Germany on an overtime goal. But, make no mistake—the game could have gone either way. Nine players from the ‘03 team return, most notably the dangerous striking pair Hanna Ljunberg and Victoria Svensson. A rash of injuries recently plagued the Swedes, but if the team stays healthy and young standout Lotta Schelin, a dominating force in midfield, plays to her potential, Sweden could reach the final again.

-NIGERIA While they may be the best team Africa has to offer, Nigeria historically struggles in World Cup play. They advanced to the quarterfinals in 1999, but had a dismal showing in 2003, going three-and-out without scoring a goal. The players are hard tacklers, who have the ability to play fast, creative offensive soccer. Defensively, though, Nigeria is suspect. Forward Cynthia Uwak, one of the best strikers in Africa, leads a Nigerian team hoping to overcome past inconsistencies.

Verdict: The media dubbed this the “group of death” because three of the teams are currently ranked in the top five in FIFA world rankings (USA 1, Sweden 3, North Korea 5). While it isn’t unthinkable that North Korea or Sweden could shock the US and take first in the group, the United States is favored to make it out on top. That means North Korea and Sweden will have to duke it out for second place and a spot in the quarterfinals against Germany. Every game in this group is a must win. Overshadowed by the other three contenders, the Nigerians (currently 24 in the world) have to raise their game tremendously if they hope to escape the group.

Group C

-NORWAY Once a powerhouse in women’s soccer, having won the World Cup in ‘95 and Olympic gold in ‘00, Norway fell off the radar after a loss to the US in the quarterfinals of the ‘03 World Cup. The team relied heavily on a direct style of play in the past, launching long balls over the top of defenses for forwards to run on to or win in the air. Under new coach Bjarne Berntsen, however, the team has learned to play a more technical, passing game similar to other European powers, Germany and Sweden. The team is full of inexperienced players, but the return of star midfielder Solveig Gulbrandsen from pregnancy, and the presence of goalie Bente Nordby, one of the best in the tournament, might be enough to help Norway go deep into the tournament.

-AUSTRALIA The Australians have been a part of the last three Women’s World Cups but have yet to make it out of the group stage. Recently, the Australian Football Association switched from the Oceania qualifying region to the Asian qualifying region. And the switch has made all the difference for Australia. The fast, athletic players face much better competition against the likes of China, North Korea, and Japan. If defender Cheryl Salisbury can keep the defense as strong as it has been, Australia just might make it out of their group this time.

-CANADA Like he did when he coached the Norwegian Women’s National Team, Canada coach Even Pellerud relies on his players’ physical strength and power to win games. Canada plays quick, counter-attacking soccer that led them to fourth place in the ‘03 World Cup. Kara Lang and Christine Sinclair make a lethal combination up top for the Canucks, but two lopsided losses in recent warm-up matches against the United States and Brazil, along with questionable team harmony, make a repeat of their performance from ‘03 seem a bit lofty.

-GHANA The Ghanaians have long been one of the best teams in Africa, second only to Nigeria. Like Nigeria, they might be good enough to dominate in their region, but on the international scene, the Ghanaian women face an uphill battle. Goalkeeper Memunatu Sulemana is one of the best players on the team. And she has to be. In previous World Cups, Ghana’s defense was known for its lapses. Offensively, Ghana boasts the African Women’s Player of the Year Adjoa Bayor. But Sulemana and Bayor will be hard pressed to help Ghana make it out of their group.

Verdict: Norway is the strongest team in the group, but if Australia and Canada play up to their potential, first place might not be assured for the Scandinavians. Ghana’s speedy, opportunistic play might allow them to disrupt the standings for the other three teams (and they’re fun as Hell to watch), but they won’t finish in the top two of the group. Canada vs. Australia should be the best game in the group.

Group D

-CHINA It’s hard for fans of women’s soccer to imagine China not being one of the obvious favorites to compete for the title. Following the team’s second place finish in the ‘99 World Cup, though, China’s women’s program fell into a period of decline. They still play the same style that made the team powerful in the late ‘90s, focused on speed and sharp passing. The Chinese simply don’t have the athleticism and strength that allowed them to take games over as they once did. New coach Marika Domanski-Lyfors, who coached Sweden to a second place finish at the ‘03 World Cup, is confident the Chinese can finish in the top four, buoyed by the play of veteran forward Han Duan and youngster Ma Xiaoxu. With home-field advantage in this World Cup, and in the Olympics next summer, China might find their way back to the top of the women’s game.

-BRAZIL There is no doubt that Brazil is the most improved side in the women’s game. After being relative pushovers in the first two World Cups, the Brazilians placed third in the ‘99 event. And, in the Olympics in ‘04, Brazil almost toppled the US in the gold medal game. 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year, Marta, and lethal striker Cristiane constantly shred defenses with their amazing dribbling skills and pinpoint passing. Known for their creative, attacking soccer, the Brazilian’s often come under fire for their lazy defending. Should the Brazilians figure out a way to keep other teams from scoring, they might live up to the hype as pre-tournament favorites.

-DENMARK The Danes are the weakest of the European teams in the World Cup. But if their performance in the Algarve Cup in March was any indication, the team is ready to show the world what it can do. Denmark placed second in that tournament, which included Sweden, Germany, Norway, and China, losing to the US in the final 0-2. Speedy forward Johanna Rasmussen’s runs up the flanks can wreak havoc on opposing defenses, and if midfielder Katrine Pederson can help her team maintain possession in the middle of the park, Denmark might be able to survive the group stage.

-NEW ZEALAND With Australia playing in the Asian Confederation to qualify for the World Cup, New Zealand was able to roll through the Oceania qualifying tournament, outscoring opponents 21-1, and book a spot in the World Cup. But New Zealand plays few games outside of its weak qualifying region. In July, the young and inexperienced Kiwis played a friendly match against the US and lost 1-6. Still, defender Rebecca Smith and veteran Wendi Henderson are hoping their young team can gain valuable experience for the next World Cup in 2011.

Verdict: If the fans can invigorate the mediocre home team, China might be able to upset Denmark and Brazil and take first place in the group. If the Chinese flounder, expect Brazil to finish first and Denmark to clinch the second place spot in the group. New Zealand isn’t strong enough to upset any of these teams and probably won’t win a game.

ADDITION: So why have we seen almost no Spanish La Liga futbol so far in the first two weeks of the season? Turns out there is a big struggle over money owed between two company's who do the broadcasts, and it's in the hands of the courts now. The Spanish Professional Football League for some reason has refused to step in and sort out the mess. Isn't it their product that is being pummeled in this mess? The folks at GolTV are also hoping it gets fixed, cuz without an agreement there are no satellite feeds for them to show us. What a mess. A website called Typically Spanish has some details. The New York Times Goal blog has another new entry from New York forward Jozy Altidore. It's titled My Favorite Things. I wonder if he knows about the amazing John Coltrane tune of the same number. One of the great songs of all time. (Thanks to Matt L for the
-Sidenote: I had resisted listening to John Coltrane's version of the song My Favorite Things, the song from the Sound Of Music. As an ultra music snob I could not for the life of me figure out why Coltrane would play such a silly little "kids" song. But after many years of devouring every other note he and his bands had recorded I was left with only this track. So one day about 10 or so years ago I took the plunge. On disc 4 of a 4 CD set titled Live In Japan, the entire disc was filled with 1 tune - over 57 minutes of My Favorite Things. How could this be? In actuality the entire set only consisted of 6 tunes. And being a guy who was always up for a big musical challenge I dived in. And after just a few minutes I knew that this was not for the weak of heart, and poor of taste. This was a serious challenge. Forget the rest if you are not one of the insane souls who dig this kinda thing. The song starts of with a long bass solo and then the band kicks into high gear, breaks it down repeatedly and steps up over and over again to give us that amazing melody (yes I said amazing melody) that make this so special. I have heard several other recordings both live and studio since then of Coltrane doing this song and they are all simply magical. But I don't fault you for not finding this to your liking. Like I said, there are only so many of us "geniuses" (hahahahha) who get off on this sorta musical journey. If you are one of us, then please lay down on the ground, crank up Live In Japan and hand your heart and soul over to Coltrane for an hour of pure all-out bliss.

I don't know how many of you have seen this, but Inter Milan has an alternate shirt this season that is white with a big red cross on the front. My friend Daniele did a little research on the significance of the shirt: Apparently the Cross of St George is the symbol of the city of Milan, and according to what I have read, the cross of St George appeared as a flag in the Battle of Legnano (near Milan) 29 May 1176... before it was used in England.

A Friend In Mexico Reports In To du Nord

Our friend & reader Andrew, aka, Hessian Obsession, is currently spending time in Mexico and took in a couple of league matches last week. Here are his excellent reports:

A few days ago I went to a Pumas of UNAM futbol match in Mexico City. I´ve been to a couple of their home games in past years, but never alone and not with the intention of sitting in the ¨porra¨ with all the aficionados. My friend couldn't get out of work in time, so I hopped the bus and headed to Olympic Stadium, made famous by the John Carlos and Tommy Smith black fist salute in 1968. The previous week there had been some intense clashes between Puma´s largest porra called ¨Rebel¨ and Club America´s ¨La Monumental¨, so the riot cops were in full effect even for a seemingly inconsequential match against the lowly Puebla club. As we entered the gates, each person had to go through three different security check points.

As we reached the inside of the tunnel leading to the upper deck, it was clear that this was going to be an experience without precedent. The tunnel was jam packed with fans from the Rebel porra. All you could see beyond the human traffic jam at the end of the tunnel was a fury of waving flags, but what gave me the goosebumps was the intensity of the singing in what now felt like a crowded party in a dimly lit cave. As the crowd repeatedly sang and chanted about their love for the club, the noise kept getting louder until it reached a crescendo. At this point everybody went nuts and started jumping up and down in a seeming euphoria to the beat of the drum! This continued for about 15 minutes, before the crowd poured into the stadium right as the game started.

As we reached the general seating of the porra, it became apparent that there would be no sitting, nor would there be any let up in the singing and clapping.

To move up or down the aisle, you had to go through the legs of people standing on top of the end posts for each row. These particular aficionados stood like this, straddling the aisle, the whole game. Not to mention that many of them were shirtless in the dark as it was pouring rain. The stands became a virtual party, weed smoke wafting through the air. In total, the whole Rebel porra had to have been anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 people.

The match itself was rather sloppy in the rain, but it was almost impossible to keep an eye on the whole game with all the general mayhem in the stands. As the Pumas scored the first of their two first half goals, it was all out pandemonium! People rushed forward on top of the concrete stands, pushing and pulling in excitement. As some were falling down in the chaos others were helping them up. As this subsided, the began to sing a song where everybody slid to their right and then back to the left. It was a marvelous sight to a few thousand people all moving in the same rhythm! This all repeated over again as the crowd delighted in the Pumas second goal a few minutes later.

It looked like the Pumas had the game in the bag, but they conceded two goals near the end of the match to finish with a tie. The porra seemed stunned, but continued their support for the blue and gold until the final whistle. Now on to Pachuca to see the Tuzos play their first game since winning the Super Liga Championship…

- - - -

Three days after watching the Pumas tie yet another match, I decided to take a bus to historic Pachuca. Located only 75 miles outside of the capital, I wanted to see for myself what their legendary club was all about. As I arrived in this picturesque town, I noticed that there were pasty shops on every block. A pasty is a baked pastry filled with meat and vegetables, most commonly found in Cornwall, England. I was told by a local resident that Cornish immigrants settled in the area to work in the nearby mines near the turn of the 20th Century. More importantly, it´s also recognized that Cornish immigrants are also responsible for bringing fútbol to México, played on breaks between their work shifts in the mines.

As I entered the stadium to see the Tuzos take on San Luis Potisí, I noticed that there was very little security. It was a very casual atmosphere, a far cry from the rowdy crowds that dominate games in the capital. The stadium looked very new and had a polished feel to it. As I entered the stands, behind the Pachuca goal there were supporter´s sections on each side. I sat near ¨La Ola Tuzo¨, the larger and more vocal of the two porra. As the teams warmed up, they showed a replay of the Super Liga penalty shootout, much to the delight of the crowd.

Right before the match was about to start, I was surprised to hear the NFL´s theme song boomed over the loudspeakers as the P.A. announcer called on the crowd to support their championship club. It seemed contrived and unnecessary for such a renowned futbol club. Also, the crowd definitely had a more middle class, family friendly atmosphere than I had expected with lots of young kids filling the seats of the porra. I was somewhat skeptical about the prospect of a memorable experience, but the crowd made its presence felt once the match ensued.

The first half was a toughly fought affair, with both sides having good opportunities on the pitch. Near the end of the first half, a sloppy defensive error by Pachuca led to San Luis´ first goal. The crowd was not happy as the whistle sounded the end of the half. As the teams left the pitch, over the loudspeaker´s they played that cheesy song from the Rocky soundtrack, ¨Hearts on Fire, Strong Desire¨!

As the second half started and the rain started to come down, no more than a few minutes passed when Pachuca scored to equalize the game, sending the crowd into a frenzy. One young girl wearing a Pachuca poncho climbed all the way to the top of the barbwired fence behind the opposing team´s goal to show her admiration! From this point forward, the game was all Pachuca. They scored four unanswered goals, but it could´ve easily been six or seven! The poor opposing goalkeeper, looking like Paul Simon from the 70´s with his curly balding mullet, was mercilessly berated by the crowd. The match was a total blowout and the crowd loved it! To show their approval, the crowd sang ¨Cantan No Llores¨ in a most boisterous manner near the end of the game. Seeing Pachuca at home was a blast, but now it´s back to Mexico City to see if the Tuzos can win on the road against Cruz Azul…

Big Hairy Bastard News

Embarrassingly only 28,000 tickets have been sold for Sunday's USA v Brazil match in Chicago.

~and~

Carlos Bocanegra, Landon Donovan & Tim Howard were named finalists for the 2007 United States Player Of The Year. The award will be handed out on Oct 5.

~and~

There is no player conflict between the Spanish national team and the Catalonia team that was supposed to play the USA on Oct 14. The reason that the Spanish Football Federation has put the kibosh on this match is that they are afraid that even with little known players for Catalonia the game will overshadow Spain's Euro qualifying matches on dates near that date (they are not scheduled for the same date.) This has to be one of the lames excuses I have ever heard of for exerting pressure on a region of a country. It all politics folks, and Spain does not like places like Basque, Catalan, or Andalusia showing them up.
