Some Soccer News for Aug 28, 2017

It's Day 240 of 2017.

USMNT

World Cup Qualifying is back and the games this week (Friday) and next (Tuesday) are big challenges.

Schedule:
-Fri Sep 1
USA v Costa Rica - 5:55pm CT on ESPN
-Tue Sep 5
Honduras v USA - 4:30pm CT on beIN

My USA WCQ Notes:
  • A couple of key injuries are the story for the USA. Right fullback DeAndre Yedlin and left centerback John Brooks both have leg injuries and were not called in at all.
  • Right fullback options are basically Eric Lichaj and Graham Zusi.
  • Left centerback options are Matt Besler, Geoff Cameron and Tim Ream.
  • There is also the issue that right centerback Omar Gonzalez is just returning from an injury at Pachuca, with 1 full game back.
  • Forward is a real bright spot, where all 5 guys are scoring regularly right now. The options and match ups are as good as they have ever been.
  • I am confused by not bringing in a young goalkeeper, especially Ethan Horvath who is the starter at Club Brugge now.
  • Midfield has plenty of depth if not the perfect form for some of the players right now as Acosta is inconsistent and Johnson just returned from injury.

What are the scenarios that get the USA to the World Cup? By Brian Straus for Sports Illustrated.

Geoff Cameron is a big key player now for this USA squad. Him and who else are the defenders for these two games? By Steve Davis for Four Four Two.

On DaMarcus Beasley, the Houston flooding, and other USMNT notes. By Grant Wahl for Sports Illustrated.

What Bruce Arena needs out of this USA roster for the 2 big games. By Jeff Carlisle for ESPNFC.

A review of this USA squad, which is surprisingly close to my thoughts above. (Great minds think alike.) By Brian Sciaretta for American Soccer Now.

USA Roster
  • G: Brad Guzan - Atlanta United, Tim Howard - Colorado Rapids, Nick Rimando - Real Salt Lake
  • D: DaMarcus Beasley - Houston Dynamo, Matt Besler - Sporting Kansas City, Geoff Cameron - Stoke City, Omar Gonzalez - Pachuca, Matt Hedges - Dallas, Eric Lichaj - Nottingham Forest, Tim Ream - Fulham, Jorge Villafana - Santos Laguna, Graham Zusi - Sporting Kansas City
  • M: Kellyn Acosta - Dallas, Paul Arriola - DC United, Alejandro Bedoya - Philadelphia Union, Michael Bradley - Toronto, Fabian Johnson - Borussia Monchengladbach, Dax McCarty - Chicago Fire, Darlington Nagbe - Portland Timbers, Christian Pulisic - Borussia Dortmund, Cristian Roldan - Seattle Sounders
  • F: Jozy Altidore - Toronto, Clint Dempsey - Seattle Sounders, Jordan Morris - Seattle Sounders, Chris Wondolowski - San Jose Earthquakes, Bobby Wood - Hamburger

Altidore, Bedoya, Besler, Bradley and Cameron all have a yellow card and will miss a game if they get another one.

MINNESOTA UNITED

Results:
-Sat Aug 26
Chicago 1-2 Minnesota

My MNUFC Notes:
  • Game highlights [VIDEO]
  • I am so glad I was at this game!!! Thanks to my awesome traveling partners Charlie, Rich and Doug.
  • FIRST ROAD WIN! That was an important win for the Loons. On the road in Chicago.
  • Loons are no longer the worst team in the league in Points Per Game. They are on 1.00 ppg, while LA sits at 0.92 and Colorado is at the bottom with 0.88.
  • Going in I thought this was a winnable game, even prompting me to predict a 2-1 win the night before.
  • Chicago looked exactly like I thought they would: disjointed enough on defense to allow quality chances and very little confidence that they could score enough goals to win.
  • No Ramirez again. Still out with the hamstring injury.
  • Danladi bagged both Minn goals. Great for him. Very needed after several underwhelming performances in a row before this game.
  • The assists for both goals came from the right side of the field with Finlay getting the 1st and Thiesson getting the 2nd. Both did a great job to set up the goals.
  • Imagine the potential when Finlay and Jerry get enough time together on the right side of the field and really start to click and work as one. They will be hard to stop.
  • Loons defense looks shaky but they pulled it off. A real nail biter.
  • A one point late in the game I asked those around me. "How many shots can a bullet proof vest handle before the Kevlar breaks down?" That's how many times Chicago fired at the Minn goal. But they held tight.
  • Molino had another very bad game. So many poor passes and weak effort. Jogging back on defense, taking the easiest defensive position instead of the best one over and over again. THEN in the last 10-15 minutes when Minn needed some real composure to hold the lead and get the 1st road win it was Molino who led the charge. Especially when it came to holding the ball, making the right run, connecting on the perfect pass, pointing to spots for teammates - acting like a god damn high priced veteran! Thank you Kevin Molino, you earned some respect back.
  • The coach needs to dig deep and use his knowledge as a former striker to find new offense for this team. They only had 2 shots on goal in Chicago. Luckily they both went in.

And then there is this:

  • The Dark Clouds bought this brick in 2006 or 07 or whenever the stadium was being built - it was for a charity. Now it has paid off. Like a Trojan-Horse, we were on the inside all along!

Schedule:
-Sat Sep 9
Minnesota v Philadelphia Union

Examining the Minn United roster building budget 3/4 of the way through season 1 in MLS. By Sam Stejskal for Four Four Two.

Loons headed off to play for their national teams:
  • Boxall - New Zealand
  • Calvo - Costa Rica
  • Molino - Trinidad + Tobago
  • Taylor - Jamaica
  • JVenegas - Costa Rica

dN

MLS

My MLS Notes:
  • How is this for a special player? Diego Valeri has 16 goals this season, and has scored in 6 games in a row!
  • Toronto. Yeah. A winning machine. They will be tough to stop.
  • With a tie and loss Dallas has fallen below the playoff line. Considering they were many people's favorites to challenge for MLS Cup this has come as a shocking descent into mediocrity. They just don't have the real striker they need to take them over the top, and an injury here or there has kept them off balance. Plus, since their key playmaker Mauro Diaz has come back from a long term injury they just haven't been the same high quality team.
  • Seattle has thundered up the charts just like they did last year and are now #1 in the West.
  • With a 1-1 tie New York City claims the local derby for 2017. By Andrew Das for the New York Times.

Week 25 Results:

Sporting Kansas City has their 100th consecutive MLs home sellout this weekend. Before they opened their stadium they couldn't give tickets away. What a massive difference that place has made. The stadium has probably put a big chunk of money away toward paying for itself. Amazing.

US Open Cup

Cincy lead 2-0 into the 74th minute. At home. And the Red Bulls, like other MLS teams before them, were clearly rattled. But 2nd half subs for NY upped the teams energy and pressure. They controlled the ball almost the entire 2nd half, and then in the 75th and 78th they struck quickly to level the score and badly wound the Cincy players and fans. The game did go to Extra Added Time, but again NY poured on the the pressure until Bradley Wright Phillips got his 2nd goal of the game, and finished it off.
  • It was a helluva game.

But the dream is over for Cincinnati. By Patrick Brennan for the Cincinnati Enquirer.

RBNY will travel to SKC for the Cup.

In a similar fashion to FCC I will never forget the 2005 Open Cup run for the Minnesota Thunder, who also made it to the Semifinals.
  • In a way the Thunder run was even more impressive in that they beat 3 MLS teams in a row (Cincy beat two - both at home), the first 2 at home and the third on the road at Kansas City (I got maced at that game.) Then MT had to go to LA Galaxy for the semis (where Cincy played another home game.) Minnesota lost 5-2 to the Galaxy, but had an early chance to take the lead and on a penalty kick that Melvin Tarley put over the goal. Who knows what could have happened if that goal had gone in for the Thunder.

Semifinals Schedule:

My MLS Notes:
  • Guess who is in first place in the West? Yeah, you got it. Houston. No? You didn't guess that? Me neither. Wow.
  • The top 4 teams in the Supporters Shield race are all in the East! And Toronto is 10 points up on best in the West.
  • The DCU-RSL game was delayed a day because of heavy rain causing a flooded field on Saturday. The game was played on Sunday to only about 1000 people. Ugh.
  • Every time I have felt dread coming for the Montreal coach they seem to turn it around.
  • The inverse is true for Vancouver - right when I think they are looking good, they flop. They have needed a new coach for 2 years.
  • Sean Johnson should be named Player Of The Week for his job shutting out LA at home. He won't be, cuz it will go to someone who got a couple goals. (For instance Justin Morrow for TFC.)
  • The red card for Kaka was a joke. He and former teammate Aurelien Collin where cleary goofing around when Kaka grabbed Collins head in a fake aggressive way. Then the ref, AFTER USING VAR, tossed Kaka. Watch it here. Yes it looks bad at first. Come on. Both players were laughing as the action happened. There was no ejectable(?) offense there!
  • Seattle, Toronto, NYRB, Houston + NYC keep establishing their superiority.
  • KC, Chicago and Dallas fell short in establishing theirs.
  • Clint Dempsey bagged his 50th goal for Seattle, and it was a game winner of course.

MINNESOTA UNITED

NOTE: Minn is off this weekend. They were originally scheduled to play at Atlanta, but a delay in stadium opening has pushed the game back a few weeks.

Ethan Finlay is a Loon. MNUFC acquired him from Columbus (the only pro team he has ever played for) on Wednesday for a pile of salary cap exemption money.
  • The 27 year old right midfielder was born in Duluth and grew up in Wisconsin.
  • Finlay is having his worst season in several years and is looking for a jump start.
  • 2014 he had 11 goals, 2015 he had 13 goals, 2016 he had 6 goals, and so far in 2017 he has just 1 goal.

Jose Leiton from Costa Rican club Herediano is now a Loon as well. The 24 year old left sided midfielder comes recommended by Francisco Calvo, and stands at just 5'5".
  • Leiton got his first international cap for CR playing in the Gold Cup against the USA. He came on as a sub in the semifinal match.

MINNESOTA UNITED

My MNUFC Notes:
  • After a 4 win over DC last week the Loons fell into a dry well and lost 0-4 to Seattle.
  • Two questions emerge; 1) Where did the team from the week before go to? And 2) How bad is DC?
  • Game highlights [VIDEO] via Minnesota
  • Game highlights [VIDEO] via Seattle
  • In the first 20 minutes both teams had good energy and good scoring opportunities. The problem was that Seattle finished 2 of their 4 while Minnesota missed on all 3 of theirs with out forcing the keeper to make any saves.
  • Overall it was pretty painful to watch.
  • The Loons had a few chances, but only threatened the Seattle keeper 1 time - on a nice shot from Nicholson. On the 2nd Seattle goal one of the best headers of the ball in MLS history, Chad Marshall, is left completely unmarked at the back post, and of the best American goal scorers of all time, Clint Dempsey, runs completely free to the opposite post to head the crossed ball into the net. How is this possible?
  • I could dissect all 4 Seattle goals pretty easily and show you what went wrong, but I am tired.
  • Clint Dempsey had 2 goals. He is good.
  • Jordan Morris is fast. He is good.
  • Danladi had chances. But he is lacking the final pieces of the puzzle.
  • Molino had chances. He can be a lazy player on too many occasions. One minute good, one minute bad.
  • Nicholson had chances. The jury is out, but I doubt he is better than what they already had on the roster.
  • There was a good 15 minute period in the 2nd half with the score still 0-2 that Minnesota applied a ton of pressure in their offensive third. The only problem is that they only got off 1 decent shot in that time and the Seattle keeper made a strong save. Otherwise the Loons looked unprepared to breakdown the opponent. There looked to be no apparent philosophy, strategy or plan.
  • Heath appears to not enjoy the play of Ibarra. He took him off in the 68th minute with team down 2. Five minutes later they were down 4.
  • Heath made that change, bringing on JVenegas, looking for an immediate difference. He got it - no more defense from his midfield. Instant shit.
  • Taylor must be sitting on the Minn bench wondering what he did wrong? "Boxall gets the start over me?"
  • Taylor had a solid Gold Cup starting every game at centerback for Jamaica who went to the Final, but he returns home to [whisper] NOTHING.
  • JVenegas. Wow, were his 22 minutes on the field worthless or what?
  • Calvo was OK.
  • Thiesson got burned more than once. Get some sleep Jerry.
  • Jome. Yeah.
  • Ibson cannot be allowed to take any more set pieces. Its a waste of time.
  • Cronin. Did he play?
  • Ibarra. Back to too much chicken with his head chopped off. Hustle it one thing. Running for no reason is another.
  • No one in the league got beat worse than Minn's 0-4 at home. Only New England also gave up for goals, but they scored 1 and were on the road.
  • The two biggest home crowds of the season have produced losses of 1-6 and 0-4. WTF? Maybe they should play in front of much smaller crowds.
  • But calling the game a sellout is pretty lame. Selling out the lower bowl is great. Only the 2nd time its happened in 14 games. But at 22,000 in attendance its only 44% of the stadium capacity.

My MLS Notes:
  • VAR made its debut and canceled two goals that should have been canceled. 2 for 2. Perfect. Thank you very much.
-A review of how VAR worked, the back story, and the potential. By Graham Ruthven for the Guardian.
  • David Villa - just a hat trick over the rivals. His first MLS hat trick too. He is good.
  • Dallas is in a bit of stumble bum mode. Diaz is not the same as before. Zimmerman is out. Acosta wants out. That's not a good combo for success.
  • Chicago has all the pieces working - talented players all over the field. So impressive after the past 6 years.
