dN

The Wall Street Journal reports that Major League Soccer has found a place in New York City to build a stadium for the 20th team - Flushing Meadows.

dN

Is MLS aware that the videos on their website have not worked for a few weeks now for many people?
-Even the 2nd and 3rd divisions in the USA have this simple shit figured out. Get with it guys.

dN

A photo like this just might make LA Galaxy fans heads explode with joy. Yes that is Omar Gonzalez in FULL training with the team 6 months after blowing out his knee. But who is that next to him?? Yes folks its long time Netherlands and AC Milan star Clarence Seedorf, although the Galaxy say he is just spending time in LA and asked if he could train with the team. How great would it be to see him in an MLS uniform?

STORY OF THE DAY

Montreal spent a ton of money renovating their Saputo Stadium re-opening it on Jun 16 for the first time in the team's short MLS history. new capacity is 20,341. In one word how have they done on attendance? TERRIBLE!
-Sat Jun 16 v Seattle - 17,112
-Sat Jun 23 v Houston - 12,357
-Wed Jun 27 v Toronto - 14,412

Is there something going on that we don't know about? If there is something going wrong the front office has confirmed that they don't know what it is.

And to that end the Impact replied this morning on their website with an acknowledgement that things are not going well with game day ticket sales or season ticket sales, and they are not sure why.
-Its admirable that they can admit this.

UEFA EURO 2012

Italy pulled off the big upset and sent Germany packing. And the massively controversial Mario Balotelli scored both goals for the Italians. And on my oh my what goals they were!

Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated on how Italy got the job done against Germany.

And on the 5th matchday Cristiano never even got to step up to the spot.
-Portugal took Spain all the way to a Penalty Kick Shootout, then put their star player in the 5th spot which his team lost before they ever got to. Unreal. Who screwed that up?

Y'ALL READY FOR THIS?

Colorado is planning to line up with their once potent center forward pairing of Omar Cumming and Conor Casey for the first time this weekend in over a year. They have both been wracked with injuries.

HMMMMM, VERY INTERESTING

The Seattle Times has the transcript of a press conference with Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid in which he calls San Jose fans the most abrasive fans in the league. (Hehehehehehehehehehehe.)
-Other things on the conf call are more excuses for how undisciplined his team is.
-I have to say that I am really disappointed that Sigi Schmid has continued with this vein of conspiracy against his team. Schmid mention several times that he will take care of his players, but he is clearly not doing that week after week now.

STAT OF THE DAY

One win or two draws will ensure that Toronto hits double figures in points this season. It was only just a few weeks ago that some wondered aloud whether or not they would make it.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

Yes folks, the new Vancouver Whitecaps third uniform is brown. Brown. Again, brown. An old fashioned middle of the road shade of solid brown. One last time, brown.

PICTURE OF THE DAY

Beautiful minimalist design at Euro Twenty Twelve with lots of cool artistic expressions for all the teams at Euro 2012. Very nice stuff.

FC Wembley of the English 9th division has signed the following players:
-Claudio Caniggia
-Martin Keown

-David Seaman

It is some some of weird publicity stunt that the team is doing in conjunction with Budweiser and will use these players in the 2012-13 FA Cup.

And to really stretch it out to its most pathetic end, they are filming the whole thing for a reality tv show.

Some Soccer News for Mon Jun 25, 2012

STARTERS

Watching those two MLS derby games on Sunday showed exactly how far the league has come, with two packed stadiums and 4 teams going all out. What a great end to a huge Round 16 for MLS.

That may have been the single best week of play in league history.

But unfortunately most of the media is so enamored with Europe that they have all but missed this amazing round of soccer.

The 2 biggest American sports media moguls, ESPN and Sports Illustrated, have NOTHING on the league except their regular Monday power rankings. NOTHING else!

STORY OF THE DAY

Alex Labidou of Goal.com looks at one of the big things holding MLS back in the American sports landscape - low salaries. Thierry Henry is one of a couple of insiders who chime in on the subject.

But this is putting the cart before the horse. Salaries are not going up before revenue does.

FACT OF THE DAY

Seattle has not won in seven games in a row. Its worst streak ever in MLS.

But that's nothing to Dallas which sits on 11 without a win now.

Joshua Mayer of the Seattle Times on the Sounders skid.

3rd Degree in Dallas shows the FCD frustration boil over in Twitter posting by team captain Daniel Hernandez. (A known Twitter ranter.)

STAT OF THE DAY

31 goals were scored in 9 games on Saturday and Sunday! Fantastic.
-And that comes on the heals of 21 in 6 games on Wednesday.
-That's 3.47 per game average in Round 16.
-And its not lot like there were some huge scores to boost that average - the most scored by any one team was 4, and there were only 2 of those.

PICTURE OF THE DAY

After Robbie Keane scored a goal for LA on Saturday he did a pretty amazing thing when he held up a jersey the name on the back of the Irish supporters who went missing in Poland and was later found dead.

dN

The LA Galaxy should be embarrassed that they are constantly running their stadium at 70% of capacity. They have a massive market, and a star studded team who won the championship and yet they are constantly selling about 20K tix per game. What gives? I thought they were a super club?

dN

And after game 1 at Saputo Stadium fell an embarrassing 3000 short of sold out, game 2 a week later only drew 12,357. So when they drew about 60k for the Galaxy game was that everyone who ever wanted to go to a Montreal game and they all went on the same day? Or is everyone smoking the Gouda?

dN

The Red Bulls set a new record for attendance at the Arena.

dN

On the field LA is another matter where they just won their 3rd in 8 days to grab 9 points and take the last playoff spot in the West away from Colorado.

dN

Brandon Barklage of New York enacted the ULTIMATE revenge on DC united who told him after last season that he was not in their future plans and cut him loose. He scored two HUGE goals against them on Sunday.
-Goal 1 -Goal 2 -And then this priceless gem gets posted on the MLS website right under the vid clip: (Grandma opens a can of whoop-ass!)

dN

Darren Mattocks of Vancouver has now accumulated 4 yellow cards in just 7 games this season. He appears to be going for Danny Dichio/Jermaine Jones goon numbers.

dN

TFC barfs up another 2 goal lead, this time giving up the tying goal 4 minutes into second half stoppage time.

dN

Wow, did Philly drill KC or what!?!?

dN

Two teams as mediocre as Dallas and Chivas don't deserve anything more then a really boring scoreless game.

dN

Don't look now but Toronto is up to 5 points on the season.

dN

The color of Seattle's third shirt is toothpaste blue.

dN

It was a 25th straight sellout game in Portland! Every home game since they joined the league has been a packed house.

It would have been a lot more enjoyable on Thursday if the Czech Republic had shown up to play the game instead a weak bunker attempt. They didn't do that very well. And they were boring. If I was Czech I would be pissed off at how lame my team was.
I later read that their coach said that style was their only chance to win. To that I say bullshit. Roll the dice buddy! If you go down swinging you will be beloved. This way you won't be remember at all. Actually you might, as a loser.

Alvaro Fernandez - Seattle - red card

Seattle has now gone 6 games in a row without a win.

A massive crowd of over 46,000 in Seattle on Wednesday night, and full stadiums in Salt Lake, Houston and Vancouver were pretty cool too.
-Houston had stated that their goal was to sell-out every home game this season, but in just their ? game in the new home they fell a short. Damn.
-Rotten night at the box office for both Colorado and Chivas USA.
-Seattle had an extra 7000 in the stands as part of a promotion by Liberty Mutual insurance. Wow.

Houston moved above Columbus for the 5th playoff spot in the East.

Chivas and LA are now just 1 and 2 points respectively out of the last playoff spot in the West.

Some Soccer News for Wed Jun 20, 2012

STARTERS

I believe that soccer leagues around the world spending millions of dollars for electronic goal-line technology that will be used only on rare occasions is NOT a good use of money at all. That money can be spent on more players, and a fraction of it can be spent hiring more referees to patrol the area at each goal. A much much much much better use of money.
-And to make it pretty funny I wrote the preceding before the "goal" by Ukraine was not given. Yes it sure looked like a goal on TV replays, but the referee standing right on the line made his call that we all have to live with. Was it a goal or not? Would electronic goal-line technology have called it a goal? We will never no. But I still stand by my opinion. Yes refs get it wrong, but if we held players to the same perfection standards we held referees then there would be no players left to field a team.

THE ULTIMATE IN PATHETIC BEHAVIOR ON THE PART OF UEFA

UEFA has shown their complete hypocrisy when it comes to fighting racism. Check this out:

-Nicklas Bendtner of Denmark scored a goal at the EURO tournament then pulled up his shirt to show off the waist band of his undershorts that featured the name of a personal commercial sponsor. For that they fined the player 100,000 Euros and suspended him from the national team's next competitive match.
-Russia has been deducted 6 points from the 2016 Euro qualifying tournament and fined 120,000 Euros for fan violence and supporters displaying that monstrous banner that read "THIS IS RUSSIA" (basically saying Poland is Russia and not an independent country) in the stands.
-Meanwhile Croatian supporters were found to have used racist chants and banners, and their federation has been fined the pittance of 80,000 Euros.

UEFA has yet to rule on German supporters unfurling a Neo-Nazi banner.

These people who run UEFA are some of the lowest cretins on the planet. Their idea of stamping out racism is like wiping out smoking by wagging a finger at it.

Pathetic.

STORY OF THE DAY

Our great Friend In Football Rich Allen runs the Fulham FC dedicated website Craven Cottage Newsround and recently laid out this very revealing statistical analysis of the rise of Clint Dempsey. As Rich himself said, a bit dry but might interest some 'mericans. I think it will more than interest them.

Classic Rich Allen:
Dempsey has now scored 50 times for Fulham: 10 with his left; 25 with his riiiight, 12 with his head and, entirely summing the man up, 3 with ’other’.

Some Soccer News for Tue Jun 19, 2012

STARTERS

The television rights in England for the Premier League went for $6 billion in a three-year deal announced on Wednesday -- an increase of 70 percent. BSkyB bought five packages covering 116 games a season, while British Telecom acquired the other two for 38 games.
-ESPN, ITV, BBC and others got no games.

A completely crazy round in MLS starts Wednesday, ends Sunday, and includes all 19 teams playing in 15 games.

AFP reports that Bob Bradley's Egypt team lost at home in their first leg match of qualifying. The return leg is at Central African Republic on Jun 29.

STORY OF THE DAY

This is a disturbing financial story and a warning to every city that finances a sports stadium.

Chicago Tribune sees the Chicago Fire's Toyota Park stadium in suburban Bridgeview as a financial disaster for the small town.
-Thanks to Joe for the heads up.

OOF!

It just keeps getting worse in Toronto!

Daniel Girard of the Toronto Star reports that 3 Toronto FC players were arrested at a nightclub in Houston after a confrontation with police.
-Complete with mugshots!

The team is scheduled to play on Wed night in Houston and had flown there on Sunday after their Saturday night game in Kansas City.

Here is the official team statement on the incident.
-And its a deep and well thought out one too. Much like their game plans this season.

Maybe the most embarrassing part is that one article claims the cops "ran down" a TFC player. Which leads one to ask, Are the cops that fast or TFC players that slow?

Great drama in Group C ended with the two favorites advancing anyway. And even though Ireland have probably been the weakest team in the tournament, no one has been nearly as big a failure as Netherlands. They were ultra-stinky!

Why in the world were there so many empty seats at the opening of the stadium in Montreal. It was surreal how many open seats there were. 3000 UNDER sold out. Wow. What a screw up that is.

MLS MATCH NEWS

EJECTIONS:
Darren Mattocks - Vancouver - 2 yellow cards
Jair Benetiz - Dallas - red card
Jhon Kennedy Hurtado - Seattle - red card

dN

Justin Mapp glided through half the Seattle team to score a really nice goal for Montreal.

Hot Damn! Grazzini to Nyarko for a fantastically headed Chicago goal!

Eric Avila hits both posts with a shot for Toronto. He couldn't do that again even if he tried.

Chris Rolfe got his first goal for Chicago since returning to MLS.

It was good to see Josh Saunders back in goal for LA after nearly 2 months away for personal reasons.

Two new head coaches made their debuts this weekend - John Hackworth for Philadelphia and Paul Mariner for Toronto - and both saw little change in their bad performing teams. So much for a bump from a change in coaches.

Last week the chatter was all about Vancouver's Darren Mattocks diving all over the field, so this week he turns around and does it again, this time trying to draw a PK only to see the referee yellow card him, and then to make it much worse less than 2 minutes later he takes out his frustration on Drew Moor by lining him up and and taking him out with a poor tackle leaving the referee no choice but to book him again and send him packing with a red card.

Seattle needs a goalkeeper badly.

You can talk about it all day long, but the only reason TFC has been this rotten since day one is that they have never had any good defenders, and that trend continues. Nothing has changed in the back for TFC. Nothing.

How about that Jair Benetiz? Dallas battles back to tie their rival Houston and then the fullback throws an elbow that gets him tossed, puts his team down a man and they go on to lose, again, remaining winless in 10 games.

KC showed Toronto how to play the 4-3-3, and they didn't need a coaching staff full of Dutch to teach them how to do it.

Montreal just pounded Seattle! And the Impact is quickly becoming the best expansion team since the Sounders. Not as good, but the best since.

Seattle's Jhon Kennedy Hurtado got a red card for a play that may not have even been a foul.

MLS NEWS

Montreal midfielder Patrice Bernier has been named Player of the Week.
-He set up 3 of the teams 4 goals against Seattle.

Montreal has agreed with Italian forward Bernardo Corradi to a contract extension through the end of this season. He had previous only been signed until Jun 30.

Ives Galarcep of Fox Soccer with an article on DC United goalkeeper Bill Hamid who had a very rough start to his second season as the DCU 1st string keeper.

New York will be without 3 for their midweek game in Vancouver - centerback Wilman Conde will be rested, midfielder Mehdi Balouchy is waiting for his green card and can't leave the country, and head coach Hans Backe has to attend to some "personal matters."

Scottish midfielder Barry Robson has arrived in Vancouver and should be ready to go when the summer transfer window opens next week and he is eligible to play for his new team. The only question is will he be worth the huge contract they gave him? I don't see it.
