Some Soccer News for Thu May 31, 2012

STARTERS

The final 2 MLS teams joined the US Open Cup action last night and again their success rate was only 50% as Portland was taken down by amateur team Cal FC managed by Eric Wynalda in one of the biggest upsets in modern Open Cup history! Seattle, who bought their home game, got the win over Atlanta Silverback of the NASL.
-A loss like that one last night for Portland is what gets a lot of coaches fired.

dN

Avi Creditor at Soccer By Ives writes that Terra in Mexico is reporting that 3 Guatemalan national team players are being investigated for match-fixing while playing for Municipal in the CONCACAF Champions League, and have been removed from the national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
-And those players are not nobodies either: Captain Gustavo Cabrera, former LA Galaxy player Pando Ramirez and Yoni Flores.

TEAM USA - EL EQUIPO DE TODOS

The USA came back to earth with a 1-4 loss to Brazil in front of a huge crowd of over 67K in the DC area.

An amazing crowd of 67,619!

Yes they got beat pretty bad, but there were times when they took it to Brazil as well, and only a brilliant game by goalkeeper Rafael kept the scoreline so wide.

Franco Panzio of Soccer By Ives writes that after the game USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann said he thought his team needs to be a bit nastier.

Many critics launched into tirades saying that is NOT what the USA needs to do.
I am not gonna link to all of them, but if you Google Klinsmann and Nasty you will see a lot of hand wringing.

Privately I have been telling people for years that I think the USA needs to be a lot tougher toward opponents. The bigger teams push them and the referees around. Some of the smaller CONCACAF teams do the same thing. They need to be a lot more intimidating. The captain of the team is too passive, with too small of a personality. Yes I know the captain is a good guy with good work habits, but NO ONE is afraid of him. No one is afraid of any of the USA players. No referee is ever intimidated by the USA. I hate that this is the way it has to be, but until the rules change then the USA has to be more aggressive. Has to be. Last night when Jermaine Jones got sick and tired of the Brazil players pushing the USA players around he simply lined up their best player along the sidelines (Neymar) and chopped him down. He was too aggressive, but he had the right idea. Why weren't our defenders and midfielder putting that little rat haired kid on his ass all night long. Especially in the first 20 minutes. Neymar's fancy little dribbles and moves toward the box would have been over before they even started. Did you see him the next time Jones came near him after that ugly tackle? Ratboy just turned quickly and back passed the ball. He wanted nothing to do with Jones. I think the USA needs more of that attitude.

And looky here, Jonah Freedman of MLSsoccer.com agrees with that sentiment.

If I gave Oguchi Onyewu a rating for the first half last night it would have been a big fat ZERO. He was absolutely horrible. I was actually wondering if he had taken a sleeping pill or something. He was slightly better in the second half. Total rating? 2.

It seemed like Brazil was on a mission to neutralize Landon Donovan from the first minute. Every time he touched the ball there were two guys on him and others were closing fast to invade the passing lanes. It was effective.

Tim Howard also seemed to have an unusually poor game. He just seemed to be getting beat too easily for his very high standards. I know his defense let him down, but it still seemed like he was a step behind on the third and fourth goals.

Clint Dempsey admitted that the groin injury has been bothering him for at least 6 weeks. So it was good to see him play for over 20 minutes last night. And lets hope he came out of it closing in on 100%.

Some Soccer News for Wed May 30, 2012

STARTERS

All 16 MLS teams in the US Open Cup got to begin the tournament against lower division opposition this week. And last night in 14 games 7 of them were sent packing!

The most incredible of those wins goes to the Harrisburg City Islanders of 3rd division USL Pro beating the New England Revolution!!!

Here is how the game played out - New England goes down to 10 men in the ? min and the 90 minutes ends 0-0. In Extra Added Time New England blows the doors out going up 0-3. And then amazingly Harrisburg comes back to tie it 3-3 in dying seconds. The game goes to a Penalty Kick Shootout, and with Harrisburg up 4-3 their goalkeeper saves the shot of USA international Benny Feilhaber and the City Islanders snatch a huge victory!
-Read the full game report (video included) and news on many of the other upsets by Jonathan Tannenwald of Philly.com.

-Other teams have been mentioned in other articles.

MINNESOTA STARS FC

Real Salt Lake Head Coach Jason Kreis On the match:
"First and foremost I want to make sure we do the right thing here and give credit to Minnesota, because I don’t want to talk too much about how poorly my team played, I want to talk quite a bit about how well they played. From minute one to minute 90 it looked like their team wanted it more than we did. At the end of it all, I think the score was fair, because the effort just wasn’t good enough."

STARTERS

See you all the Sweetwater for the Minnesota Stars tonight and the USA tomorrow night!
-Or make sure you find a good place to watch them both somewhere else if you don't live in the Twin Cities.

STORY OF THE DAY

20 people have been arrested over the past 2 days for match-fixing in Italy including Lazio captain and Italy midfielder Stefano Mauri. On top of that, the current manager of Juventus Antonio Conte (dating back to when he was coach of Siena) plus 2 more members of the Italy's current Euro 2012 team (Leonardo Bonucci and Domenico Criscito) are on a longer list of people who are now under further investigation.
-Conte immediately declared his innocence.

All of this stems from a growing investigation that began with a series of arrests earlier this year of Serie B and former Serie A players.

This just got a lot more serious.

Here is the arrest warrant naming the 20.

AFP reports that Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti is suggesting that Italian football should be canceled for 2 to 3 years to really sort this mess out.
-Football Italia reports that some think this is an impractical idea.

FIFASCANDALIZATIONINGS

The Trinidad Express reports that law enforcement authorities in Trinidad & Tobago have officially told Jack Warner that they will NOT prosecute him for bribery in connection with the CONCACAF meetings of May 2010.
-You will be stunned at how little, virtually none, investigation done into this matter by local police, thus no evidence is available to proceed.

By the way, Warner and the Trinidad & Tobago Football Association have still never paid the money that judges have ordered them to pay to the members of the 2006 T&T World Cup team.

Minneapolis (MN) – A grass-roots coalition of supporters and businesses has formed seeking the advancement of professional soccer in Minnesota. For over 30 years, Minnesota has supported a professional team, but professional soccer in Minnesota is at a critical stage.

The Vikings made soccer features key components of the recent stadium legislation signed by the Governor, with the organization publically considering a Major League Soccer (MLS) team. However, Minnesota currently fields a team of over-achieving professional soccer players; the Minnesota Stars FC, the defending champions of the North American Soccer League (NASL).

With the dynamic environment for soccer in Minnesota, the prospect of a top-tier MLS team is tempered by the possibility that the exclusive rights for bringing an MLS team to the state has created a lame duck situation for the Minnesota Stars. With the Stars currently searching for a new owner, the stadium bill will have driven away all other potential owners. As a result, the Vikings stadium bill may end up killing professional soccer in Minnesota for at least the next decade.

In response to these threats, in the interests of local businesses that thrive off the economic stimulus, and in support of professional soccer, the coalition behind MLS4MN serves as an organizing foundation for professional soccer in Minnesota. And with its mission to bring the highest quality soccer to Minnesota, MLS4MN supports Minnesota’s local pro teams, while maintaining the goal of ultimately attracting an MLS team to the Twin Cities.

As stated by Ben Pfutzenreuter, “Because if there’s one thing Minnesotans do well, it’s working together for our future. Major League Soccer represents additional jobs, revenue, entertainment, and cultural appeal for citizens, current and prospective.” Major League Soccer has currently the 3rd highest average attendance of all leagues in the US. Further, soccer supporters realize MLS markets are the primary targets for international soccer events like US Mens National Team games and European friendlies.

MLS4MN recently addressed the controversial trade of the Stars right to host a home game in the US Open Cup in exchange for undisclosed financial considerations from the MLS-leading Real Salt Lake. Citing a difficult business decision, the Stars gave up the home game it earned with its second round victory in Des Moines last week.

While acknowledging how hard it is to lose an opportunity to compete against an MLS team in Minnesota, the coalition looks forward to demonstrating to MLS our local soccer culture through our support for the MN Stars. Ben Pfutzenreuter puts it succinctly, “We hope Don Garber and RSL recognize that we are taking one for the team, especially in future considerations."

Local supporters, led by the Dark Clouds, will cheer on Minnesota’s professional soccer team as it faces one of many future MLS opponents. The Minnesota Stars FC have arranged for a viewing party, starting at 7 pm, at the Sweetwater Bar & Grill, 161 St. Anthony Ave. near downtown St. Paul for those unable to make the trip to Utah.

Some Soccer News for Mon May 28, 2012

STARTERS

Toronto finally wins. It had happened eventually. And Philly were the victims of a 88th minute goal by Danny Koevermans.

Brad Guzan was given his release by Aston Villa and he is now free to move about the cabin - looking for first class accommodations hopefully.

TEAM USA

A very good start to the 5 games in 18 days. Three goals for El D!

5-1 for the USA. Scotland were hot, sweaty and jet-lagged. The USA were quick and direct. They even stopped playing for the last 20 minutes and got that big of a win.

49 career international goals for Landon Donovan.

You can't say enough good things about the games for Michael Bradley, with a monster 2nd goal, Jermaine Jones and Jose Torres. Those 4 midfielder completely controlled the whole game.

And hey, how about that national anthem! (Video)
-And I was thinking that the bagpipers playing the Scottish anthem had a tough time keeping in tune with each other. They sounded like they were auto-tuned compared to that weird "singing" of the Star Spangled Banner. Oof.

What did the newspapers in Scotland have to say about the game:

Tom Dart of the Scotsman with a match report. Uses the word sledgehammer to describe the USA win.

Lisa Gray of the Scotsman reports that Scotland was without 11 players, many who have been starters in the recent past.

Stephen Halliday of the Scotsman says Scottish coach Craig Levein is still optimistic that his team is on the right track.

Photos from The Scotsman.

The Scotsman says that any missing players from the Scotland lineup are not a valid excuse.

The Sun: An embarrassment.

Robert Grieve of the Scottish Sun says Scotland was Yanked apart.

The Sun gives us Scotland captain Kenny Miller's opinion of the game.

The Sun has words from Scotland coach Craig Levein who dismisses Landon Donovan's performance, and says he has better players that he would take over Donovan every time.
-Levein does not look real smart making comments like that on night like that.

The Herald of Scotland with a match report.

The Herald Scotland sees the game as a bad ending to a terrible season of football in Scotland.

The Herald Scotland talks to Tim Howard about his teammates who play club soccer at Rangers.

Mark Guidi of the Daily Record with a match report, and Scotland player by player assessments.

And for the local perspective we check in with the Florida Times Union:
-A big turnout in Jacksonville.
-44,438 a great attendance - too bad there won't be half that many in 10 days when the USA plays a game that counts in Tampa.
-The Tartan Army was in full effect.
-What about Sams Army and the American Outlaws? They were the only ones you could hear on TV!

With a nearly total lineup of backup players the Stars went to Tampa Bay and put on a fierce defensive display. It was extremely impressive to see them get a clean sheet, unfortunately the offense was not as impressive leaving the game scoreless. But for the intensity of their schedule (6 roads games in a row, and this being the 3rd game in 7 days) that is nothing to complain about. Bravo Stars!

A du Nord Review of BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston Texas

Guest article by our FIF Wes Burdine who attended his first game at Houston's new BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday.

Nothing seems to get American soccer fans, journalists, and the MLS brass more excited than soccer-specific stadiums these days. Sure the Dynamo beat the Galaxy, but did you see the stadium? It’s the funny little thing that transcends fan tribalism—we all know that a new stadium for one team is a good thing for American soccer and a good thing for American soccer is a good thing for whatever team we support.
With that in mind, I excitedly planned my trip to the Dynamo’s BBVA Compass Stadium. Every year, I visit my family in Texas, an hour and a half north of Houston, and I drag my brothers and nephew to a Houston game. This year, we got to check out the new stadium and see Houston host the Galaxy on May 26th.
Bruce asked me to write up my thoughts in a sort of review and this is going to be long-ish, but I think a new stadium is a big event, so forgive me.
The most important thing for the Dynamo (and the fans) is that this Dynamo game was a sea of orange. Everyone had Dynamo jerseys. There were a couple of the guys wearing any old soccer jersey (the dude in a long-sleeve Real Madrid jersey learned his lesson, I think), but they were minimal. This all spells not just money for the team, but it’s also a good sign that fans are interested in the team—those fans who follow it, want to watch it on tv, etc…

The Lead-Up
The stadium is beautiful from the outside, but it’s so packed into the neighborhood that I hardly got to catch it in its full glory. This also leads to the first negative: parking. Houston is a driving town, so while having a downtown stadium is fantastic, it does not necessarily translate into an urban fan-base taking public transit to the stadium. The as-yet unfinished light rail may help, but there is no Dynamo owned parking lot (just two lots for season ticket holders), so fans like us were caught in an infuriating traffic jam maze. We found a lot that was charging $20 at one entrance and $25 at another.

Inside the Park
Our seats were in section 216, located in the second tier on the end line. The sight lines were fantastic and the proximity to the field was wonderful. However, the decision to not include a roof that extends over all of the seats is sheer madness. The roof currently extends over most of the sideline seats and over one endline (leaving the four corners and our endline uncovered. It was 91 degrees and sunny at 1:30 in the afternoon and this made for two of the most uncomfortable hours of my life. My 7 year-old nephew looked like he was ready to wither up and collapse. Thankfully, the Dynamo do not have any other day games scheduled, because I would never go to another day game even if I were on the payroll.
One of the advantages of Livestrong Sporting Park’s (apologies for comparing BBVA to the greatest soccer venue in the US, but it’s helpful to compare a few notes) roof is that it keeps sound in, making the stadium feel wonderfully intimate. If your goal is to work with your supporters groups to create an “atmosphere,” the roof helps the fans transmit their noise to the opposite end of the field. One thing I’ve observed from Dynamo games is that the supporters groups play music and sing continually, but this doesn’t transfer to the rest of the stadium (last year it was 90 minutes of the brass band playing “Karma Chameleon”; this year, thank god, Boy George was limited to 20 minutes). Eventually, a group of fans along the sidelines will start a “let’s go Dynamo!” chant that will be picked up by the entire stadium, but has the hokey feel of a recorded fight song at a baseball game. One good part about our seats was that they were on metal bleachers, meaning you can stomp your feet and make a great sound for corner kicks.
The traffic pattern to get to our seats was also poorly designed, forcing many fans to walk in front of other fans through the aisles to get to their seats. Along with the other 22k fans, we tried to escape the heat by going back down into the tunnel for the bathroom and drinks but the walkways were all too crowded to even move. When we eventually left, half of the stadium was queuing up for 8 regular sized doors. In general, there was a general lack of thought put into the movement of fans through the stadium.
Here’s where a comparison to Sporting KC’s stadium helps. At Livestrong, you can walk easily around the entire stadium or even move to a few of the standing areas to watch the game. During the half-time break, you can walk over to the team store and easily browse for jerseys. At BBVA, there is a single door leading into the team store, making it extremely tight to move in or out.

The Extras
I emailed Zach, a fan who blogs for Dynamo Theory to see if I had missed anything big and he shared a similar feeling to mine: “It's nice but economical.”
There were a couple of short-cuts that seemed to be made in the stadium construction. I was surprised that each team had just a single bench to sit on. Behind that bench, where the players warmed up, there was a strip of grass and then a long strip of concrete (perhaps rubber), forcing the warm-ups into what looked like a 4 foot wide strip. There is only one large screen for replays that was located over our heads. For those of us unable to see that screen there were two very small screens on the other end that mostly carried the score, shots, and corners.
The supporters groups have a section on the endline that has bench seating (as opposed to the very nice orange seats the rest of the stadium has) that packs in the several different supporters groups. One of those groups marched out in protest after one of their fans was arrested (and reportedly tased; Zach blogs about it here.) At the time, I only noticed a large space where El Batallon had been. It’s unfortunate for all involved that this appears to be an intractable mess. At the time, I laughed at EB’s large tifo banner, “No One Likes Us. We Don’t Care,” but now it strikes me as odd that a group makes their primary tifo display something that has nothing to do with celebrating the team.

Final Verdict
Thank god the Dynamo made it a good game, because the heat and sun made the game difficult to watch. I am imagining an evening game where the soul-crushing sun wouldn’t be beating down and I have to say it’s something to make fans proud. The view of the field is wonderful and the stadium is beautiful. On those pleasant evenings, the 90 minutes of play will be wonderful. But you have to wonder how bad weather days will make filling that stadium difficult. I also can’t help but wish that there were fewer short-cuts and a little more attention to detail, which would make all the other aspects of getting to one’s seat and getting to one’s car a bit less of a chore.
But if you’re a Dynamo fan, you should feel proud. You have a great start and you can keep working to embarrass your neighbors to the North when people compare your attendances to theirs. One parting note to any Houston fans reading. When Hainault (pronounced, “Hey-no”) scored the goal I couldn’t help but wish that the fans would sing his name to the tune of Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over”—it’s too perfect to not use. That one is free; send me $5 in the mail for more brilliant ideas.
