FIFASCANDALIZATIONINGS

A series of happy Tweets from Herr Blatter today on reforming FIFA:
@SeppBlatter
-Historic day for FIFA’s reform process; two-chamber Ethics Committee approved.
-One chamber investigates and the other chamber acts as a judge
-I proposed this in June 2011. It is also the main point made by Pieth’s Independent Committee
-New Audit & Compliance Committee also well received – another milestone.
-Delighted that the Executive Committee has agreed to back me on this crucial reform
-Particularly happy that the ExCo backed my proposal to have a female member
-Football is for men and women. Vital to have a female voice on the Committee

Those messages were all posted before the report came out so you knew nothing negative toward Blatter was on the way.

The Independent Governance Committee that was set up to suggest reforms for FIFA has filed their initial report. Read it and weep.
-One person on Twitter has already called it the shuffling of the deck chairs.

The document basically says FIFA is hiding things, and that an investigative committee should be formed, but does not call for any specific investigations, and says nothing about looking in to the bids for the 2018 and 22 World Cups. Very sad.

dN

Bobby McMahon at Forbes looks at the mess FIFA is trying to clean up in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup, and what that could mean for the 2016 Olympics in the same country.

2011-12 CONCACACHAMPIONS

Semifinals

Toronto was able to put up a good fight and hold Santos Laguna to a 1-1 tie. Not really enough to give them any advantage going to Torreon next week but at least it will be game on at kick off.

And not surprising to anyone - The Santos Laguna goal was scored by Herculez Gomez! Fantastic!

The biggest moment of the match happened as the whistle blew and both benches cleared and the teams went at it. Word has it that a Santos player hit a TFC player to set it off. A second Santos player got a red card in the incident after another had been sent off during the game. The end of the 2nd Leg could be a wild affair.

It still stuns me after all these years how many times we see Mexican teams involved in scrapes after tight or lost games. Amazing.

Defending champs Monterrey stuffed Pumas in the second match of the night.

Ryan Wolstadt of the Toronto Sun writes that TFC deserved to win the game, not just tie.

Duncan Fletcher of Sports Net calls TFC Jekyll & Hyde because their CCL form has been so much better than their MLS form, but I think its pretty obvious that the team has put all their eggs in this one basket knowing that bad results in a couple of MLS game will not make or break their season, where as you only get a couple CCL game to get it right.
-If I was a GM or head coach I would do things the exact same way that Toronto has.

HMMMMM, VERY INTERESTING

"...there was no doubt in my mind I would do nothing more but hurt the team by staying on."

Steven Goff of the Washington Post talks to goalkeeper Bill Hamid about what went down with the USA Olympic qualifying team.
-Those are a sting of extremely poor excuses. As the keeper if you are injured you lay on the ground as long as it takes, forcing the ref to stop the game.

Jonathan Wilson of Sports Illustrated writes about the chaos surrounding the English national team with Euro 2012 about 11 weeks away.

HMMMMM, VERY INTERESTING

ESPN reports that several football leagues, including MLS, have officially launched the World League Association. Their aim is to be "the leading voice of the leagues at world level."
-Don Garber has been named to the Board of Directors.

WELL WELL WELL

The story from a Philadelphia Union press conference today appears to be that head coach Peter Nowak did not like the Inquirer's Marc Narducci continuing to ask questions about the team trading away Sebastien Le Toux before the season started, which cause Nowak to get quite upset with reporter and the two of them raising their voices at each other. Supposedly Nowak walked out of the press conf then came back to yell at Narducci some more.

Is the pressure of an 0 for 3 start to the season getting to Nowak?

The Philly press collectively feels that Nowak has not properly explained why he traded away a productive and popular player.

Some Soccer News for Tue Mar 27, 2012

STARTERS

The USA is knocked out of qualifying for the Olympics in the group stage. It should have been a formality. And why did NO ONE do anything about Terrance Boyd getting smashed in the face???? NO ONE. I am not saying someone should have gone out there throwing more punches, but how about some face to face screaming and yelling! Some anger. Some fight. Those things were missing in all three games, not just the end of the El Salvador game.

dN

How did David Estrada get credit for a shot that was not on goal and then deflected back across and into the far side of the goal? That was a clear own goal.
-The only thing I can figure is that MLS hates own goals!

dN

Why are some writers giving big props to Vancouver??? I know they have 2 wins and a draw, but have you looked at who they played? The wins are over Montreal and Chivas, terrible teams and the tie is against DC, a pretty bad team. So lets wait a while until we start raving about the Whitecaps.

DU NORD AT THE CONTROLS

USA U23/OLYMPIC TEAM

Olympic qualifying is over for the USA! In very dramatic fashion.

dN

It was a great night for El Salvador.

The USA could not come up with the answers they needed to advance and were punished for it.

All capped off by some horrible individual performances, some very weak decisions by the coaching staff, and more of that over confidence that doomed the team in game 2 against Canada.

On the plus side, I am very encouraged that this elimination has so many people so riled up. It means we are starting to really care, to really invest our passion in bigger numbers, enough numbers to cause waves even when its just Olympic qualifying. These are new times for us American soccer fans. And I love being part of it.

dN

Brian Sciaretta of Yanks Abroad does his best to summarize the failed qualifying effort.

Brian Straus of Sporting News writes that Jurgen Klinsmann's plan to upgrade USA soccer involves patience, including the junior teams.
-Straus describes the "accident chain" that lead to the elimination.

Ron Blum of the Associated Press examines the impact of the loss, with some quotes from big names.
-Oh yeah, and Bruce Arena still can't STAND the site of Sunil Gulati!

Chuck Murphy of the Denver Post is pissed off and says this team needs a lot less style and a lot more grit.

dN

Coaches have it way too easy, as no reporters appeared to ask the tough questions. Why was Joe Corona subbed out against Canada at half time? Why was Bill Hamid left on the field with an injury? Why were both Joe Corona and Freddy Adu subbed off late in the ES game when they could have been used to hold the ball and kill the game? And why were they subbed BEFORE stoppage time started, when the sub times could have been used to kill off even more stoppage time?
Again style was given rank over substance when Porter said: "You sometimes have to prioritize winning less to play a certain way." Are you kidding me?

The checklist for failure:
x head coach without pro or huge game experience
x poor coaching decisions on line up, subs and formation
x weak goalkeeping
x only 4 defenders on roster
x playing several players out of position
x over confidence in abundance
x not knowing how to kill off a game
x guys who are not totally committed
x mental frailty
x not ready for rough, tumble and weird CONCACAF

As much as I want to blame defenders and goalkeepers for all the woes, the midfielders didn't give them any protection or support and the line up only had 1 holding midfielder in place, and that one got an early yellow card.

USA U23/OLYMPIC TEAM

Olympic qualifying is under way!

dN

Juan Agudelo tore the meniscus in his knee and will be out approx 4 months. Exactly what this team did not need with such a small roster.

Great win for Canada on Saturday night.

The USA must win on Monday night to advance. The only way a tie will be good enough is if Canada loses to Cuba in the first game.

A lifeless performance by the USA on Saturday let Canada grow in confidence then dictate the pace in the second half and finally get two well deserved goals.

Overconfidence rose up its cliched head and bit the USA right in the face. They were fairly gutless for the entire 90 minutes. And goal keeper Bill Hamid was particularly awful on the first goal. The entire defense went to sleep on goal 2, but give Canada credit for that second one too cuz they wanted it!

You have to imagine that the friendly win over Mexico last month added to the overconfidence of this USA team.

If they can't be El Salvador tonight then they are really a pathetic group.

John Molinaro of Sports Net calls this win by Canada one of the biggest in the countries soccer history. He really wrote that.

One thing that has been driving me insane since Jurgen Klinsmann took over as head coach of the Men's program is this insistent talk of "STYLE." Who cares! How about winning! Win first, worry about how it looks later. The USA is in no position quality wise to be spending 1 minute worrying about how they look doing it. Just get the job done!

MLS MATCH NOTES

Ejections:
-Jeb Brovsky - Montreal - red card

Average Attendance this round: 20,396

A goal was given to Seattle's David Estrada but his shot was off target and deflected off Houston's Geoff Cameron, so it should be scored as an own goal.

Rafa Marquez of New York was very lucky to not get his second yellow card, which he nicely earned with rugby tackle.

Thierry Henry gave all the credit for New York's quality performance to Wilman Conde.
-All long time MLS watcher know that when he is healthy Conde is very good.

George John started for the first time this season for FCD.

Nick Rimando v Dan Kennedy is a great goalkeeper duel on paper, but neither had much to do until late when Rimando coughs one up and loses the game, and Kennedy makes a huge lunging save to save it for his team!

TFC rested Danny Koevermans but played the rest of the regulars as they got blown out at home by San Jose. Does not bode well for their Champions League form.
-The Toronto defense is again a complete shambles! two games played and six goals allowed. And they were lucky Wondo only got 2 against them and didn't have 3 or 4 goals, as he blew open chances.

Whats the deal with the Ghouls in the stands in Columbus????? Creepy!

Goals to watch and live by:

-Ricardo Villar of Dallas with a deft free kick goal, but KC made it way too easy, the keeper gave him 2/3s of the goal.
-Dominic Oduro leaps and twists to smash home a header for Chicago.
-Driving, slashing powerful header by Omar Vargas of Columbus.
-Chris Tierney of New England with a great long cross and Saer Sene using his head to tip the ball over Portland's keeper for the only goal just 28 seconds into the match to boot!
-And the best for last, how many times have you seen Thierry Henry and ONLY Theirry Henry pull off both of these two stunts: First stealing a weak defensive pass and punking a centerback and keeper; and then blasting behind a back four off a perfect pass from Wilman Conde! Just gorgeous!
