The du Nord 2010 MLS Best 11. See it here!

dN

What are the odds that in both France & Germany this weekend we see the exact same matchups: #1 v #2, and #4 v #3? How weird is that?

dN

Stephen Brunt of the Toronto Globe & Mail reports that TFC has hired Jurgen Klinsmann as a "consultant."

MLS PLAYOFFS

Colorado barely holds on to win the first game of this years playoffs. For a team who play at high altitude they should have looked more dominant down the stretch, but it was Columbus who poured it on at the end and nearly got the tie.

For the second straight season Columbus coach Robert Warczycha made a baffling move with his star Guillermo Barros Schelotto. Last season he didn't play him in the first leg and paid for that mistake by being ousted at home in leg 2. Now this season he pulls him with over 20 minutes left to go, then watches his team turn up the effort and produce multiple corner and free kick opportunities at which Schelotto excels like no one else in the league. Wow. Will it cost them again?

Over all, that was one ugly game of soccer, but this series was lined up to look that way compared to the other 3.

Can someone remind me why Jeff Larentowicz is in a Colorado shirt and not a New England shirt.

PODCASTS

Hey everyone! Let's take some time and listen to the new podcast from the great website A Football Report. Check it out now.

VIDEO CLIP OF THE DAY

I have to admit - this is pretty frickin funny. I never thought I would type that sentence when referring to Ellen Degeneres and David Beckman.
-Stolen directly from the great Offside Rules!

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Attention potential season ticket holder for Orlando City SC. This is what your owner Phil Rawlins things of you:

"Why would they be? When you're talking about investment on the scale and the range we're talking about, you're talking about investment from business people and executives in the community, not a season-ticket holder. They've given their all and their help by contributing and buying tickets ... but there's a lot of distance between your season-ticket base and (investors)."

You've been warned.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

How will Seattle, Portland and Vancouver deal with security when their fans travel to each others stadiums next season?

Don Ruiz of the Tacoma News Tribune has words from Seattle GM Adrian Hanauer on the topic.

HMMMMM, VERY INTERESTING

In an official press release from the New York Cosmos they have announced that their legendary player Giorgio Chinaglia has rejoined the club as their International Ambassador.

I have one question about this though. Has he ever been cleared of charges in Italy of extortion, insider trading and money laundering while he was President of Lazio? He fled the country when the first arrest warrant was issued.
-The story has laid quietly in the corner since 2008. The Irish Times had the most thorough story I ever read on the subject. But I have not seen anything more about it in 2 years.

I am not passing any judgments here, but those are serious charges.

THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

WHY NOT!

Torsten Frings says he wants to play in MLS. Does he have any idea how hated he is here?

-The team will be called Orlando City SC.

The new team will play in the new 3rd Division league - USL Pro.

The Austin Statesman has an article on the team leaving Texas.

Faithful reader Dave pointed out to me that I was incorrect yesterday in saying the Austin team was SOLD. The same owner is moving the team, and partnering with new investors in Orlando.

And Rochester Rhinos has also announced that it will play in USL-Pro next season too.

So that makes two more teams, along with Vancouver and Portland that will not be playing in the 2nd Division next season.

Will there be a 2nd Division?

DO YOU REALIZE

In this season of big name retirements from MLS, one guy has been lost in the shuffle - Steve Ralston!

Tons of accolades have been poured out for Jaime Moreno and Brian McBride. And then you have the long time quality pros Clint Mathis, Mike Petke, CJ Brown, Chris Klein and Eddie Lewis signing off as well.

But Ralston need his own celebration. The leagues true iron man, played the most games and most minutes, and delivered the most assists. Just ask Taylor Twellman how important a player Steve Ralston was in this league.

The fact that Rally gave it up mid-season due to knee injuries is why we didn't see a lot of praise go his way at seasons end. But to me he deserves as much love as those other 5.

Thanks Steve.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Where in the world is Ricardo Clark? The last we saw of him he was being subbed off the field in the 30th minute of the USA World Cup loss to Ghana. He has yet to even see the bench this season for his German club team Eintracht Frankfurt.

HMMMMM, VERY INTERESTING

IMScounting looks at 5 MLS players they rates as transfer prospects.

FACT OF THE DAY

Jaime Moreno finished his DC United career on Saturday with another penalty kick goal, giving him a grand total of 133, moving him back into solo possession of the leagues all time goal scoring lead, 1 over Jeff Cunningham.
-The question remains as to whether or not JM will get to add to his total at another MLS club next season.

STAT OF THE DAY

51 goals. That is how many the Colorado duo of Conor Casey and Omar Cummings have combined to bag in the past 2 seasons.

WHY?

This is so sad. 7 people died in Kenya in a crush to get into a game between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards at the national stadium. Damn.

An Angry Open Letter to the Fine Folks Who Run Match Day Live

Dear Friends at Match Day Live (Text Version Below),

Letter to MDL Page 1

Letter to MDL Page 2

Dear Friends at Match Day Live,

Hello? How are you? Enjoying my $40 dollars? I sure as hell hope you are because I’m not!

For the last couple years as a poor college student, and now as a semi poor married man I’ve happily paid the ever expanding cost of your live service to watch my favorite team, the Kansas City Wizards play. I loved being able to know I could watch them reliably online even if the quality wasn’t great. I paid because even though, for free, I could go to my2p2.eu or justin.tv and usually find the game, coverage was spotty and looked even more pixilated than your rather pixilated service.

So this year, when you charged me $40 dollars I shelled out because 1) I have a shitty TV and 2) It’s not in the budget to get regular cable (or extended, or FSC, or DirectTV).

Excited for the 2nd or 3rd game of the season (I attended the 1st two), I turned on Match Day Live, but low and behold, all I could get was a black screen that said “Watch this game on ESPN, FSC, or an affiliate. I knew the game wasn’t on those channels, so where the hell was it?

Letter to MDL Illustration

All the away supporters in the chat channels were talking about the game, I just couldn’t see it! Frustrated I gave up after repeated attempts.

I repeated this pattern for several different Kansas City Wizards games, trying to watch my team only to find the feeds blocked from me.

The reasons? MDL, as I learned from other angry Big Soccer patrons, blocks your access to the game if is being shown on any local channel.

What utter bullshit! The reason so many people follow MLS is because they can do it all through the internet! We read about it online, we follow live games, we watch crappy feeds, and all of this allows me, and other poor people, to follow a sport and not have to pay 100s for cable. I didn’t pay $40 to watch the random teams play, I paid $40 to watch the Wizards and to block me out, not inform me why, all while taunting me with people happily chatting while they watch, is a slap in the face!

With Love,

Graham Fox

ROONEY v FERGIE

Game over - Fergie wins - as always!

I guess I should have gone with my gut on this one, rather than my eyes & ears influencing my mind. It sat within me the whole week that Rooney was going nowhere, and that 75% of the mania was just the typical English media insanity hard at work.

Video from the BBC.

Some News for Thu Oct 21, 2010

STARTERS

San Jose hosted Chivas USA on Wed night and the plan was to give red hot striker Chris Wondolowski a well earned night of rest -he was in the 18 man roster, but not the first 11. So much for that! His replacement Cornell Glen got injured late in the first half, so Wondo warmed up and entered the game sitting at a scoreless tie. What did he do? Bagged a hat-trick (the first on a PK) in a 3-0 win. Wow! I mean Wow! Holy Cow Wow! He is now tied with Edson Buddle as the top goal scorer in MLS at 17. No one, and I mean no one saw this season coming. See lots more about Wondolowski in the San Jose Earthquakes section below.

ROONEY v FERGIE

Whatever happened to the philosophy we so often hear from clubs - "Hey, look, if a player is not happy here and he wants to leave, then we don't want that player around and we will help them leave." Don't we hear this from clubs all the time? Why is it so different now? Because he is a big name player, and not an average one?

The guy wants out. The transfer window opens in 10 weeks. Do what you like with him until then.

On the other hand, why does something in the back of my head keep whispering.... "He's not going anywhere. He and Red Nose will make up."

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Matchday 3

dN

All the people going nutty over Tottenham's Gareth Bale and his 3 goals against Inter yesterday need to take it down a notch. Or six. Yes, it is great any time a player can bag the hat trick, but is it really that impressive to do it after the other team is up 4-0, has turned out the lights, and gone home to bed? Not really. I'd put it more down to luck of timing than skill.

dN

Rob Hughes of the New York Times reviews all the games from Wednesday.

dN
So, after 3 rounds Arsenal, Real Madrid, Bayern, Chelsea & Lyon have earned all 9 points.

MLS TEAM & PLAYER NEWS

General News

Jason de Vos of the CBC asks about the possible change in Canadian player quotas for the now 2 and soon to be 3 Canadian clubs in the league.

The Wall Street Journal has a pretty meaningless article trying to compare MLS to NBA attendance, and saying some markets have soccer teams that are besting their basketball counterparts. They use average attendance as their stat. If they use total number through the gate for a full season its not even close. I know the NBA teams have 41 home games compared to MLS 15, but come on, this is one lame argument.

CHICAGO FIRE

This is it for a great one - centerback CJ Brown plays his last game today! All best to him on a great career.

Charlie Corr at ESPN looks at the Fire goalkeeper situation - Sean Johnson is back healthy, but Andrew Dykstra has done very well the past two games. So who plays tonight?

COLUMBUS CREW

Shawn Mitchell of the Dispatch checks out the Crew's long and tough road over the past 2 months of games.

DC UNITED

Lots of former DCU greats will be in attendance for Jaime Moreno's last game. It would be cool to be there!

All the local writers are covering the end of the DC career of Jaime Moreno:
-Craig Stouffer of the Examiner.
-John Haydon of the Times.
-Joseph White of the Associated Press. Via the Examiner.

Clemente Lisi of the US Soccer Players Assoc does a Q & A with interim head coach Ben Olsen.

HOUSTON DYNAMO

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION

PHILADELPHIA UNION

Tobias Lopez at Sports Illustrated sees the Union's best chances of improvement is through youth.

REAL SALT LAKE

The Davis County Clipper has a profile of owner Dave Checketts.
-Make sure you "STOP" the slideshow before you start reading or the formatting of the page will shift back and forth the whole time. I got nauseaus.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES

Last night's win moves SJE up one spot in the playoff seeding to #7, where they are currently matched up against Columbus.

Elliot Almond of the Mercury News on Chris Wondolowski's big big night.

Wondowlowski is now tied with Edson Buddle for the MLS Golden Boot with 17 goals.
-This was his second hat trick of the season, which no Equake has ever done.
-He has scored the teams last 9 goals. While this is great for him, its scary for a team headed into the playoffs. If he doesn't score, will the team?
-And he broke the regular season goal scoring record of 15 set by Ronald Cerritos.

Last night was the first time that this incarnation of the Equakes has beaten Chivas USA.
