PODCASTS/VIDEOCASTS

The boys of Stjarnan who brought us the brilliant "deep sea fishing" goal celebration, now take us on a trip to the shitter. Great videos!

DO YOU REALIZE

I have waited until I've seen the first 3 episodes of Fox Soccer Channel's new show Soccer Talk Live starring Kyle Martino to comment. And I don't have to use a lot of words to describe what I think of the show - It really stinks.

I have no idea who the show is directed at. Me and other hardcores? I hope not, because if they are shooting for me to watch then they have missed so badly that they are truly clueless about what hardcores might want. Maybe they are going for the teen market. Okay. But I can't imagine they are gonna check this out either. And if its for lite-soccer fans who dig celebrity, then they have to get a real production to pull that off.

Here are my real issues with the show:
-Kyle Martino is decent when used as a commentator on a live game broadcast. But he is not nearly quick enough on his feet to carry an off the cuff, loosely scripted monologue or interview.
-The sidekick. Who is that dude?? Wow. He is not camera friendly. Slouchy, slurry, and not witty enough. And again, who is the guy? Regular FSC guy Keith Costigan was on the 3rd episode, and was at least more comfortable in front of a camera.
-The babes. Please, stop with the lame ass pandering.
-The guests. Yeah. OK. The guy from the soccer documentary Pelada, Luke, could have been a great guest, but Martino had no questions to ask him. And the clip they showed was so vague that someone who was not already familiar with the movie would have been confused as to what it was about. Cobi Jones appearance on Week 1 was obviously last minute, and no topic was brought up. Week 2 guest was Landon Donovan, and there was a little relevancy to that one. But both guys are from the LA Galaxy so it was pretty easy to land them.
-The celebrities. Please. Not even remotely interesting. And who are they anyway?
-Finally, they show some highlights and talk a little soccer, but you would be hard pressed to know there were any other leagues on the entire planet other than the English Premiership. FSC's ignoring of other things they broadcast like, hello, Serie A, is insulting to the viewer. Hell, you would barely know that MLS even existed watching this show.

I am not offering any proper ideas on how they can make it better, but its not that tough. Or maybe for some production teams it is. Remember I have met Nick Webster and his gang, and whoa....

I won't be watching again, and will be shocked if two things happen - 1, the show lasts more than a few more episodes, and 2, if someone says to me down the road, "You really gotta see this show, they pulled it together and its become very good."

HMMMMM, VERY INTERESTING

Noticed this one on the European transfer list today:
-Adam Clayton – Manchester City to Leeds, undisclosed

I had no idea the bass player from U2 was a football man. I would figure that his age would be a factor, but skill is skill.

Some News for Mon Sep 30, 2010

BREAKING NEWS

Bob Bradley has signed a new 4 year contract to remain head coach of the USA.
-I will say that I am disappointed. Not that I don't like Bradley, because I like him a lot. I just wanted to see some new energy and fresh air brought into the team.

There was a lot of Klinsy bluster over the weekend, but this is exactly what I thought would happen.

STARTERS

DaMarcus Beasley has signed with Hannover in Germany, joining fellow American Steve Cherundolo. Hope its a great fit for our main man Run DMB! He will wear #16.

TEAM USA

Another friendly officially on the schedule now, with Colombia traveling to PPL Park in Chester PA to face our team on Tue Oct 12. More details below in the right hand column.

BOB BRADLEY WATCH

I just want to make sure that Aston Villa knows that I, Bruce McGuire, am still available to fill their head coaches position.
-And I have heard through channels that Fidel Castro, although an alleged baseballing savant, is also interested in the job.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

-Steve Davis of Sports Illustrated wondering how the Los Angeles Galaxy has fallen into this terrible slump.

WHY?

With huge games the horizon every week in MLS the teams will get hit hard this coming weekend by international play. In the RSL v NYRB game, no less than 6 starters will be missing. A true shame. Maybe the ticket prices should be reduced too then.

DU NORD PLAYER OF THE WEEK AND OTHER STUFF

Easily Dane Richards of New York. Not long ago this guy was a scourge. The second coming of Frankie Hejduk. Tons of speed, all day energy, and the crossing ability of an angry atheist. Frankie had more shanks, but that was only because he was around much longer. BUT.... Dane was insane for the Red Bulls. His first goal on Saturday was a thing of sheer beauty, poise and maturity beyond what anyone thought he was capable. They he set up Thierry Henry for his first ever MLS goal. And they won on top of it all. Richards is a main cog in the teams charge toward a strong finish and high hopes for the playoffs.
-See that tasty goal here.

MY THOUGHTS

Yes Dallas has not lost in the past 10 road games, but they have only won 3 of those. On the other hand, Salt Lake should last season that you don't have to know how to win on the road to win MLS Cup.

MLS/SUM BUSINESS

Average attendance this past weekend was 19,215.

Pro Soccer To Leave Minnesota Unless National Sports Center Is Able To Recruit Financial Partner

Official press release directly from NSC Minnesota Stars:

BLAINE, Minn. (August 30, 2010) – Several weeks ago, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) released new higher standards for Division 2 professional soccer teams playing in a USSF-sanctioned league in 2011. The NSC Minnesota Stars, which currently play in the USSF Division 2 league, are facing a dilemma. The team, which is owned by the non-profit National Sports Center (NSC) Foundation, is unable to meet the higher financial benchmarks necessary for league membership next year.

“While we support the efforts of the USSF to upgrade the standards for pro soccer, the new standards will necessitate that we find an organization or individual willing to join us as a financial partner,” said Kris Bjerkness, Stars’ General Manager. “That’s what we need to qualify under the new higher standards.”

“When we assumed ownership of the team last January, we were very public about our desire to eventually pursue a creative public/private ownership model to bring more financial resources to team operations,” continued Bjerkness. “Now’s the time for that to happen.”

The NSC acquired this new franchise in January 2010 and has operated the team throughout the USSF Division 2 league schedule, which started in April. The NSC Stars replaced the Minnesota Thunder which had played on and off at the NSC for 20 years.

The NSC has performed several tasks at a highly successful level. Stadium presentation, public relations, coaching staff, team selection, social media, website, and game-day operations and presentation have all been very positive.

However, the NSC has not met its goals in brand awareness, ticket marketing and sales.

The NSC believes that there is a great opportunity for a private investor to help us build on the successes and improve on those areas where the team fell short of goals.

The Stars have posted an average attendance of 1,413 through 13 home games of the inaugural 2010 season. Two more home games remain in the 2010 season, September 15 vs. the Carolina Railhawks and September 18 against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

“The team needs to be selling between 2,500 and 3,000 tickets per game to be financially successful” stated Kris Bjerkness, General Manager of the NSC Minnesota Stars.

“The NSC had many motivations in starting the Stars pro team,” said Paul Erickson, Executive Director. “But one of our primary reasons was to preserve the long and proud history of professional soccer in Minnesota at the highest level possible. We were happy to step in and keep pro soccer alive for this one year, but the new USSF standards mean that we can’t go forward without additional investment.”

“Ownership of a team based at the NSC is a unique opportunity,” continued Erickson. “The National Sports Center boasts one of the best soccer-specific stadiums in the country, at the largest amateur sports campus in the world.

“We are proud of what we have accomplished in the past eight months, but the reality is that we will need a new financial partner to continue pro soccer in Minnesota.”

It was a big week for MLS v FMF showdowns! With the Mexicans dominating 3-0!

dN

"Holy Shit!" I got no less than three emails since last night that used that exact phrase. If you did not see the insane game from Azul Stadium in Mexico City pitting Cruz Azul against Real Salt Lake then do yourself a huuuuuuge favor and track it down. It is MUST SEE TO BELIEVE viewing!
-Real Salt Lake delivered one of the all time great collapses in modern American soccer history.
-There were 4 goal scored after the 87th minute! FOUR! Three of those by Cruz Azul.
-After RSL subbed off Espindola and Morales you could just see the team start to spin slowly and then build momentum as they headed for that drain pipe. They just fell apart.
-Javier Orozco was an amazing machine scoring 4 goals and Chano Gimenez did to RSL what he has done to Houston so many times.
-I have yet to mention the massive downpour that turned the field into the Boundray Waters Canoe Area.
-We also haven't gotten to the 2 huge referee mistakes in the first 5 minutes that contributed to the final. First RSL scored in the first 60 seconds but had the goal wrongly wiped out by an offside call. Then CA came back with a goal in the 5th minute that started with a free kick taken while the ball was still rolling, a no no. 2 rotten calls that were big in the end.

Some News for Wed Aug 25, 2010

STARTERS

The UEFA Champions League Group Stage draw will happen on Thursday this week.

BOB BRADLEY WATCH

Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated looks ahead to tomorrows meeting between BB and USSF.
-As for coaches getting a second 4 year shot at the World Cup, previous results have only been average:
Happened 48 times:
25 faring worse
13 faring better
10 faring the same

I don't like those odds at this time for team USA. I have stated before that I like Bob Bradley a lot and think he has done a great job for the USA, but its time for a new voice.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

dN

Great week for MLS v FMF showdowns!

dN

The home teams won both games last night, with Toronto losing 2 players to Red Cards, and Columbus giving up the games only goal in second half stoppage time.

dN

MLS teams will probably always struggle against fouls and cards on the road in this tournament unless the understand that most other leagues in the Americas don't allow a lot of rough play.

Crazy controversy for Columbus at Santos as they had a goal disallowed. Emilio Renteria went off with busted open head, from a nasty intentional elbow that the referee saw and waved off, then Renteria returned to the field (seemingly waved on by referee) to quickly send in cross for a huge goal. But it turns out that Renteria did not official authorization to come back on the field. I have no idea why the call wasn't whistled dead the second Columbus put the ball in play if they had an illegal player on the field.
-Watching the video again it sure seems as though the referee is allowing Renteria on the field.
-Wasn't Andy Iro completely offside on that goal too, and the side ref did not call it? (Just watched video replay myself, and yes Iro was behind the 2nd to last defender all the way.)
-Columbus's Duncun Oughton also got smacked in the head by the Santos coach as he grabbed the ball for a throw in. But to me it looked like Oughton took a kick at the coach first.
-The tone of the action on the field really changed with Santos subbed in the brilliantly named Charles Darwin Quintero. He was a complete menace to the Crew defense.
-Columbus's net got shelled by Santos in the closing minutes of the game, and the goal seemed inevitable as I watched.

Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch with a match report on Santos-Crew.
-More on the game from Mitchell.

dN

As for Toronto's trip to Panama, they just didn't do enough to get the win, although they probably didn't deserve to lose either. They simply weren't good enough.
-2 Red Cards did not help TFC either. The first was for a pretty bad collision, and the second off two Yellows where the first one was obvious to me, while the second one was more vague and appeared to be for arguing the first one.
-Some people seem upset about the first Red Card for TFC but when you slide into a prone keeper and your knees whack him in the head pretty hard, you have to expect the worst, and be overjoyed if its yellow.
-TFC just didn't bring the goods against an inferior opponent. Blame the ref all you want, but he is not the one who didn't bring it as a whole team for 90 minutes.
-And why in the name of Sam Hell does TFC stick Dwayne DeRosario out on the left wing in a huge game like this. He just seemed isolated and frustrated out there. He was trying to score all by himself. He should have been in the middle of the field driving Arabe crazy.

dN

Paul James of the Toronto Globe & Mail sees the game as a lost opportunity for TFC.

dN

Daniel Girard of the Toronto Star with a match report.

dN

Steve Sandor of the Sun calls TFC's performance sub-par. (Isn't sub-par a good think in golf? Aren't we using that wrong? Seems like something I would do!)

JACK WARNER/SEPP BLATTER/FIFA ODDITIES

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Q: Where did Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Rednapp get his start in coaching? (Don't cheat! See the answer in the "England" section below.)

HMMMMM, VERY INTERESTING

When I heard that Jaime Moreno was being pushed out of the moving car by DC United my first thought was that he would go play for Bruce Arena in Los Angeles. And much to my surprise when Moreno did a radio interview yesterday, the very first call he took was from "Bruce in Los Angeles" who turned out to be none other than Arena. I see it happening. (see yesterday's du Nord post for links to audio of the interview.

FACT OF THE DAY

-Peter Vermes - Kansas City
-Frank Yallop - San Jose

MLS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR CANDIDATES

I think we are down to 5 now:

Danny Mwanga - Philadelphia
Andy Najar - DC United

Tony Tchani - New York

There are a few others out there with a chance to join this elite group, but they are going to have to step up for their team in a big way down the stretch.

The New York Cosmos added to their East coast youth academy by acquiring LAFC in Pasadena and renaming it Cosmos Academy (West). The best part about these two new academies is: "costs normally incurred by the families of these elite players will now be fully covered – such as registration fees, uniforms, coaches’ salaries along with the cost of participating in select tournaments and its related travel." The teams will now be officially called BWG Cosmos and LAFC Cosmos.
