Some News for Fri Oct 30, 2009

STARTERS

What does Dan Loney thing of the LA v Chivas playoff series: "Ideally, this would be a Loser Leaves Town match. If the Galaxy wins, Chivas moves. If CUSA wins, Beckham never returns. I could handle that." Read the whole thing here. Pure genius.

MLS PLAYOFF NEWS

I cocked this one up pretty bad - I woke up this morning and realized that I had forgot to link to the only MLS Playoff Preview you need to read - from Paul Demko at Bunky County.

dN

My thoughts on the Seattle v Houston scoreless draw:
-That game was nearly a barroom brawl. Maybe more like a vicious heavyweight boxing match that went all 12 rounds and ended tied on all 3 judges scorecards.
-Honsestly it was not very good soccer, but it was the the kind of game that I could not take my eyes off.
-Sounders forward Nate Jaqua looked like he came from a civil war reenactment with that large head wrap and dried blood/disinfectant combo smeared down the side of his face.
-Houston keeper Pat Onstad did not deserve a red card for his clash with Fredy Montero - all you people who were screaming for his dismissal are smoking crack again. Yes Onstand came charging out like a drunken bull but he did not aim his chest for Montero who stepped right into it and then did his best Carlos Ruiz impression.
-On the other hand, Ricard Clark (boot to Jaqua's head) and Brian Ching (late crunching tackle from the side) both got away with brutal fouls that should have been yellow cards.
-For Houston centerback Patrick Ianni did everything in his power to get a goal against his former team, forcing Brian Mullen to clear the ball off the line once on a strong header, and banging another off the cross bar.
-The second leg match will be filled with hatred!

Got a good email from Evan today. I was wondering out loud the other day what leagues around the world average for goals per game (MLS is 2.54). I was simply too lazy to search it out, so Evan did it for me. Here is his note:
You said that MLS 2009 had 2.54 goals per game and wanted to compare that to other leagues. Here:
English Premier League 2008-2009: 2.48
Italian Serie A 2008-2009: 2.60
Greek Super League 2008-2009: 2.16
Australian A-League 2008-2009: 2.96
Japanese J-League 2008: 2.56
MLS is towards the middle and is in between two of the top leagues in the world, EPL and Serie A. You can use this link to do more leagues yourself.

Thanks Evan, I really appreciate it.

My very snarky pal Bill Archer did a great recap of the whole weekend in chronological order over at his blog on Big Soccer!
-Someday hopefully soon when all the dust settles, Bill and I will be partners on a new radio show.

dN

In the mean spirited way for which I am known, I had to laugh out loud this weekend while listening to one of the many podcasts that feature MLS. This particular show had a "correspondent" on from Toronto who was all but bragging about how his team TFC would make the playoffs because their opponent in the final round was a "Kansas City U14 Girls team". How rich is that coming from a guy who's team has never made the playoffs, and for all intents and purposes has never done SHIT in their 3 years of exsistence. Where do guys like this get off with the overly smug attitude? It's one thing to be funny, but another to be completely delusional. In the end his team lost to those young Girls 5-0 in a game that they absolutely had to win, and their teams best player Dwayne De Rosario called "the biggest game in TFC history"! I can't wait to hear the excuses from the expert correspondent now. So now like most of us have said from day 1, Toronto needs to go find a real coach, some real defenders and a couple of real forwards, then we can talk playoffs. Their true fans deserve a lot better than this crap.

MLS FAIR PLAY AWARD

The league gives out this award every year for players who go above and beyond to show sportsman ship. To me this is the award that should go to the players that have the most minutes played with the least amounty of fouls committed and Yellow Cards. Getting a Red Card should knock you off the list immediately. So I went ahead and did all my calculations and came up with this list of 3 who fit my criteria:
1 Todd Dunivant - Los Angeles
2 Jordan Harvey - Colorado
3 Patrick Nyarko - Chicago
Then I went to do my official voting for MLS post season awards, and to my huge surprise NONE were on the list of candidates! Now I am left to ponder, who came up with the list?

The game could not have started better for the USA as Spain had a player sent off in the 2nd minute for pulling down a USA player on a break away. But unfortunately Spain didn't seem to even acknowledge that they had only 10 players. If the announcer didn't tell you, you certainly could not have noticed from the action on the field.

AMERICANS IN EUROPE

Jozy Altidore with 2 giant errors in one day, and he didn't even make the subs bench for Hull this weekend. First off, he showed up late for the game (they are scheduled to arrive 90 minutes before kickoff), and then after the game he went on Twitter and told his followers why he was left off in an apology note, which the coach reacted to very badly saying that discipline is kept in house and not shared with the public. Not good for Jozy. He is being fined by the team for his mistakes.

MLS Playoff Picture

With all of the regular season games in the bag, the playoffs are finally all set to go.

Los Angeles has won the top spot in the Western Conference by winning their game over San Jose, and also holding the tie breaker over both Houston and Chivas USA no matter what either of those teams does in their match up on Sunday.

Salt Lake has clinched a playoff spot by beating Colorado, and having Dallas and DC not win.

Dallas, DC and Toronto are all knocked out of contention by not winning.

This left New England to win on Sunday and grab the very last playoff place, knocking Colorado out. (This is the 8th consecutive season for New England and coach Steve Nicol to make the post season tournament.)

Houston also beat Chivas USA to claim #2 in the West.
