Women’s World Cup Final & Third Place Previews

by du Nord reader Adam

Final

Germany v Brazil
-Sun Sep 30
6:55am on ESPN2

After soundly beating the Norwegians 3-0 in the semis, Germany became the only team in Women’s World Cup history to reach the final without conceding a single goal. The team’s offense also leads the competition, finding net 19 times.

And Brazil is right behind them.

For a team known to have a questionable defense, Brazil only allowed 2 goals throughout the tournament. They’re also second to Germany in scoring, with 17 goals. And, because it can’t be reiterated enough, Brazil has Marta.

Marta scored twice against the USA in the semifinals, becoming the tournament’s leading scorer with 7 goals. But Brazil showed in that semifinal match that its offense doesn’t have to go through Marta alone. Cristiane bagged a goal, too, and looked dangerous on several occasions. And, midfielders Daniela, Formiga, and Maycon ran the US defense ragged all game long.

Germany counters Brazil’s offensive firepower with stalwart Kerstin Stegemann, who has been her team’s best defensive player, and goalkeeper Nadine Angerer. Angerer was a bit of a question mark heading into the tournament after Germany’s starting keeper, Silke Rottenberg, picked up an injury in March. But Angerer has had a fine tournament so far, stopping the few chances that made it through the defensive wall in front of her.

On offense, Germany’s Birgit Prinz might not be as speedy or flashy as Marta, but she’s just as adept at putting the ball in the back of the net. She has help, too, from Kerstin Garefrekes and Renate Lingor. The only questionable offensive player for Germany has been Sandra Smisek. A veteran of the German team, Smisek scored 3 goals in the opening match against Argentina; since then, she’s been more of a liability up front than a weapon. Substitute Fatmire Bajramaj, a 19 year old speedster, has looked dangerous each time coach Silvia Neid has used her. She could certainly put Brazil’s defense under more pressure than Smisek.

Verdict: Even though Brazil looked unstoppable against the United States, the emotional and physical stress of that game—it was more like a final for the Brazilians than a semi—might tire the players. Coach Jorge Barcellos didn’t help matters, deciding not to use a single sub against the US even after his team was winning comfortably. Brazil comes into Sunday’s final with one day less of rest than Germany. Will fatigue be a factor?

This match-up pits two distinct styles against one another. The Germans are known for their technical precision. They don’t constantly attack, like Brazil. Instead, they probe teams, as though they were playing chess, looking for weaknesses. Brazil relies on individual brilliance and a free-flowing attack to win, and even though the team looked extremely organized against the US, Germany probably won’t have a meltdown like team USA.

If the Samba Queens don’t play as well collectively as they did against the US, Germany will be more than able to expose the team’s defense gaps.

Third Place Match

USA v Norway
-Sun Sep 30
3:55am on ESPN2

USA versus Norway was one of the greatest women’s soccer rivalries in the ‘90s. Now, it’s strange to see these teams battling it out for a bronze medal.

For the Norwegians, who weren’t expected to the reach the final anyway, a top three finish would be a great accomplishment on the team’s road to regaining its status as a women’s soccer superpower. Already, the team displayed some flashes of brilliance in the tournament, playing more technically than ever before. Talented midfielders Ingvild Stensland and Lene Storlokken proved the Norwegians can play the ball on the ground through midfield and don’t need to rely on long passes from the defense. Young strikers Isabell Herlovsen, who scored the game winner against China in the quarterfinals, and Leni Larsen Kaurin gave strong performances in the tournament and look poised to become the scoring personalities the team has been lacking for a few years.

Goalkeeper controversy aside, the US team looked entirely outmatched against Brazil. Now, after that devastating semifinal loss, the US team—like Norway—is out to prove they’re still capable of competing with the elite teams in women’s soccer. But, the team will have to play without two key players.

Shannon Boxx won’t be in the US line-up after she received her second yellow card in the semifinal for being tripped by a Brazilian player. Look for Greg Ryan to either start Carli Lloyd or Aly Wagner in her place. And in goal, the US will be playing with Brianna Scurry—not Hope Solo. Solo was not allowed to practice with the team for the consolation match and will not be on the bench when they take on Norway.

Verdict: The US has never placed lower than 3rd in a Women’s World Cup, and this team will be out to keep that record alive. Even though the fallout from Ryan’s decision not to play Solo, and from her comments to the media, put all the pressure directly on the Americans, team USA will be eager to erase the bad memories from what has been a turbulent World Cup for them and go out on a high note.

People En Espanol has named New York Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel as one of the 10 Sexiest Men in the United States! Who can argue?

I will be the first to admit that I have never been a fan of Marcelo Balboa when he is in the commentators roll for USA television broadcasts. He is so bland and obvious it just pains me. Therefore I had been avoiding his radio show From The Pitch which he does in Denver and is mostly Colorado Rapids influenced. But last night I decided to download the podcast of this weeks show and was pleasantly surprised. He had some bite to him and a touch of wit. Not too much unfortunately, but more than I expected. The best part though was his guests and the direct questions he asked. This week he had New England assistant coach Paul Mariner, former USA & MLS keeper Tony Meola, and Colorado defender Kosuke Kimura who not only made his professional debut last Saturday, but is also the first Japanese to ever play in MLS. So I am here by endorsing the show and will be tuning in more often. Check it out now.

Nearly 33,000 were on hand in Kansas City last night to see their Wizards take on David B****** (and 10 other guys too). But the man was injured, so he was not there. And as it turned out even a healthy B****** would not have been at the game seeing as his father suffered a heart attack the day before in London. That attendance number is a KC Wiz records crowd.

I stumbled upon this fascinating memo from US Soccer to referees describing the Red Card given to Colorado defender Facundo Erpen 2 weeks ago. He clipped Laurent Merlin of Chivas USA from behind on the edge of the penalty box, so he was tossed out and a penalty kick was awarded. Many disagreed with the call. I thought it happened outside the box and that Erpen was not the last defender, so he should not be Red Carded. This says otherwise. Interesting

Sky Taster News

Sadly the USA Women were badly beaten in the semifinals of the World Cup, 4-0 by Brazil. You would have to imagine that many many people will now severely question the coaches decision to change goalkeepers before this game, and some will probably ask for his head.

~and~

Many people on soccer message boards are bitching that Seattle’s small attendance numbers (just over 3000 per game) should keep them out of MLS. But remember this, the USL First Division Toronto Lynx averaged about 6 fans per game. That didn't even come into the equation for Toronto FC. They did it right, and it has worked so far. Seattle can do it to. They can also blow it. But the First Division attendance numbers are irrelevant.

~and~

The other question people have about MLS in Seattle is whether or not people from Portland will drice 3 hours north to support them. Well we all know that Timbers fans won't. Are you kidding me? But what about everyone else. The ones that think First Division soccer is beneath them. Will they go to Seattle for games? Let me ask you this..... Do Portlanders support the Seattle Seahawks NFL team or the Seattle Mariners MLB team? I don't know, but therein lies your answer.

~and~

From Grahame Jones of the LA Times: (Kansas City forward Eddie) Johnson and the Wizards were in L.A. over the weekend to play Chivas USA, and a team spokesman said Johnson, 23, had splashed out $85,000 on a new watch, necklace and a jewel-encrusted mouthpiece, "like a retainer," to add a few diamonds to the Johnson smile.

Brazil Thrashes United States

Womens World Cup Semifinal Match

Match report by du Nord reader Adam

USA 0-4 Brazil

After going down two goals and losing a player in the first half, the US saw its hopes for a 3rd World Cup title dashed by a talented Brazilian team.

The nightmare started for the US in the 20th minute when Leslie Osborne, who had been one of the team’s best players in the tournament, awkwardly tried to clear a Brazilian corner kick and ended up heading the ball into her own net.

Seven minutes later, Marta beat several US defenders at the top of the box and slipped a shot inside the near post. Brianna Scurry made contact with the ball, trying to push it wide, but her effort wasn’t enough.

Quickly, USA captain Kristine Lilly pulled her teammates into a huddle, attempting to calm them and get their heads back into the match. But the US couldn’t possess the ball long enough to find any rhythm. In past matches, Brazil resorted to fouling the United States to disrupt their play. This time, it was the United States who frantically chased Brazil around the field and used physical play to break up the South Americans’ flowing attack.

Just before the end of the first half, the chance of a US looked even more impossible when Shannon Boxx picked up a bogus yellow card, her second of the match, on a baffling call by the referee.

Brazil roared out after halftime; Cristiane’s strike in the 56th minute further exploited the depleted US squad, as Scurry had no chance at stopping the unmarked striker.

Three goals and a player down, the US couldn’t match Brazil’s relentless attack. Carli Lloyd, the only offensive US substitute in the second half, made no difference for the US midfield. In what must have been an attempt to keep the score from becoming more embarrassing, Greg Ryan used his final substitutions to put two defenders into the match. Marta quickly tested sub Tina Ellertson, freezing the US defender at the top of the US box with a beautiful flick-on before beating Cat Whitehill and Scurry to score her tournament leading 7th goal.

Not to discredit the Brazilians—they deserved every bit of their 4-0 victory—but the US team looked stunned and out of sync from the beginning. The keeper controversy leading into this match clearly affected them. Without Hope Solo in goal, the US lost all the momentum they gained in their quarterfinal win over England. Throughout the tournament, the US has lacked chemistry and continuity on the field. Just as they started to find some, Ryan’s decision to start Scurry against Brazil upset the team’s rhythm.

The loss certainly wasn’t Scurry’s fault. There was little she could do on three of the goals she allowed. Really, it was the US’ inability to generate any offense or midfield possession that hurt them most. How can they expect to score when their forwards barely touch the ball? And what happened to the US’ speed? The Brazilians ran by the US players all game long (and they weren’t the only team in the tournament to do so). Of course, playing a woman down for the entire second half didn’t help.

Team USA has been criticized incessantly during this World Cup for their uncharacteristic direct play, and this game showed that the criticism is justified. Defender Kate Markgraf, for example, thumped every ball that came to her up-field and created 50-50 balls when a simple pass would have enabled her team to maintain possession. Face it…get the ball to Abby Wambach won’t always work. If the US wants to regain its spot as a world power in women’s soccer, they should look to the teams in the World Cup final. Brazil’s creativity and Germany’s technical precision look far more effective than USA’s kick and run tactic.

There are certainly positives the US can take away from this World Cup. The team made it out on top of the toughest group in the competition and younger players gained invaluable big-game experience. Also, midfielders Lori Chalupny and Leslie Osborne had strong performances and showed they’ll be important for the future of this team.

With the Olympics and the start of another professional women’s league on the horizon, the US Women’s National Team will be hungry to prove they’re still a force in women’s soccer.ry

2007 Women’s World Cup Semifinals

Semifinal previews from du Nord reader Adam

Germany v Norway

Wed Sep 26

Going into their semifinal clash with Germany, the Norwegians have one thing that should give them confidence: they are the last team to have scored against Germany. Eleven days before the start of the World Cup, Norway found net twice against their European rivals in a friendly match. In that game, the Germans had to come from behind to secure a draw. Since then, though, nothing has penetrated the German defense.

Not even North Korea, a team expected to give the Germans their toughest game of the tournament, could put the ball past keeper Nadine Angerer. But the Norwegians are armed with the tournament’s co-leading goal scorer, Ragnhild Gulbrandsen, and will certainly pounce on any chance they get near Germany’s goal

Norway’s other Gulbrandsen, veteran midfielder Solveig, needs to keep Germany’s Renate Lingor and Kerstin Garefrekes from playmaking through the midfield if Norway is to have any chance at victory. Birgit Prinz, Germany’s star forward, didn’t score a goal in her team’s quarterfinal win over North Korea. But Lingor and Garefrekes did.

Verdict: Arguably the second strongest side Europe has to offer, Norway has started playing in a style similar to Germany’s, with short passes and an attack that builds out of the midfield. But Germany does it better. Both teams are strong and physical, but the technical play of the Germans gives them the edge over the Scandinavians.

USA v Brazil

Thu Sep 27

When the US and Brazil met in a “friendly” match leading up to the World Cup, the teams combined for 31 fouls and 7 yellow cards. As is usually the case when the US plays Brazil, the game was gritty and rough for the entire 90 minutes. Though the US won 2-0, Brazil played without the World Cup co-leading scorer, Marta.

Marta might be the most prolific player on the Brazilian team, but she isn’t the only one the United States will have to worry about in the semis. Striker Cristiane, who has 4 goals in the tournament, scored the winning goal against Australia in the quarterfinals and proved she’s just as big an offensive threat as her teammate. All over the field, Brazil is speedy and individually talented. Formiga, Renata Costa, and Daniela provide seamless attack for Brazil out of midfield, and defenders Aline and Elaine constantly venture into the offensive end.

While the US certainly hopes to keep Brazil’s free-flowing attack in check, the team also wants to capitalize on the South Americans’ shaky defense. Brazil’s ability to mark players is notoriously poor; both US goals in that recent friendly match came from set plays. The Americans would love to score during the run of play, but they’ll be looking for set pieces, especially, to get past the Brazilians.

Verdict: Brazil’s offense poses a significant threat to the US. Much like the Koreans, the Brazilians play extremely fast and throw a lot of players into attack. Brazil also has the tendency to dive or use theatrics to get calls in their opponent’s penalty area. The US will need to be careful not to give up any cheap fouls.

If Leslie Osborne starts alongside Shannon Boxx in the midfield, the US might be able to break up Brazil’s explosive offense. Team USA also has a mental edge over the Brazilians, who typically begin to play dirty as soon as things don’t go their way.

The US played their best soccer of the World Cup in the second half of the match against England. In order to beat a talented Brazilian side, the United States will have to play well for a full 90 minutes.

In case you have not seen this, Matt Pickens, goalkeeper for Chicago, makes one of the worst blunders I have seen in a long time. He simply moves his hands out of the way and lets the ball go in from a nearly impossible angle. He later said he thought it was out of play. Wow it's bad.

As much as I like Garth Lagerway's commentary on DC United TV games, yes I know he is smart, I am not sold on Real Salt Lake hiring yet another piece of their management team who has no experience at all. Who is the wise elder helping guide the young bucks? It sure isn't Dave Checketts.

Miguel Canizalez got the goal that finally ended Toronto's goal drought at 824 minutes. Ok, so who had him in the pool?

~and~

With his two goals on Saturday night Chivas striker Ante Razov has moved past Jason Kreis on the MLS career goal scoring list, and into second place with 109. That leaves him just 2 back from leader Jamie Moreno who scored on Sunday to bring his total to 111. I predicted a couple months ago that Razov would hold the record when this season ends.

USA Women Head To The Semis

Match report from du Nord reader Adam:

Quarterfinal Stage

USA 3-0 England

Finally, when facing a confident English side intent on springing an upset, team USA came to play. For after a sluggish 30 minutes that saw England control possession, the US took over the momentum of the game, scoring three unanswered goals in the second half to rout the English 3-0.

Early on, the US looked content sitting back, allowing England to control the game’s tempo. But apart from occasional runs by Eniola Aluko and Karen Carney, the English rarely ventured into the USA’s third of the field. Their best chance of the first half came when Carney swerved in a dangerous cross to the US six-yard line. Lunging for the cross, Jill Scott collided with US defender Stephanie Lopez and goalkeeper Hope Solo, hitting Lopez in the head with her cleat.

Lopez left the game to receive treatment and US fans saw shades of the American’s first match, where North Korea scored twice while Abby Wambach had a gash in her head stitched shut. This time, the US didn’t let their opponent get any good looks at goal.

Once Lopez returned to the field, the US began to control the game with quick, one and two touch passing. Just before halftime, the US missed two good chances. Wambach hit a Lopez cross over goal, and Kristine Lilly had a shot tipped over the bar.

The US came out strong after halftime, winning two quick corner kicks. On the second corner, Wambach freed herself at the back post and headed home her fourth goal of the tournament. Ten minutes later, in the 57th minute, the US found itself two goals up when Shannon Boxx won a tackle at the top of the English box and slipped her left footed shot inside the near post. The last US goal came three minutes later, when Cat Whitehill hit a long cross toward England’s penalty box that keeper Rachel Brown misjudged. Lilly ran on to the ball and easily slipped it into the open goal.

Finding themselves with thirty minutes left to play and three goals down, the English struggled to get back into the match. Leslie Osborne, who typically doesn’t start for the US in midfield if Boxx does, kept England’s star player Kelly Smith quiet for the entire match—Smith’s first shot of the game wasn’t until the 89th minute.

With the US playing poorly in the first round of the World Cup, an English upset didn’t seem too far fetched. The US team’s dominant second-half performance ended England’s dream, though, and it seems the US is peaking at just the right time. The victory against England puts the US through to the semifinals where they’ll face the dangerous Brazilians.

For a change of pace, here’s a match report from the England Football Association.

And here’s the requisite post-game analysis from US Soccer.

With quotes from USA players and coach Greg Ryan.

Dancing On Graves News

Sorry for the inconsistency of du Nord lately, but my life has been anything but consistent. I won't go into details, but let's just say it's been over under sideways down.

I can only assume that Dallas forward Carlos Ruiz lost a bet and that is why he was sporting that insanely stupid hairdo last night. Part mohawk part racing stripes. I have seen better looks in the bottom of underwear after a weeks wear on the Vegas strip. (can someone out there please help us find a picture of this hilarious mess)
-ADDITION: A reader named Arelius sent us this link to a photo & video clip of Pescado's hair. This pic is OK, but the video gets us the full effect I was hoping for!! Thanks Arelius.

One of the worst kept secrets among hardcore USA fans was confirmed today as the USA match in South Africa on November 17 became official. The game is part of a Nelson Mandela celebration.

American Clint Dempsey talking to the Fulham website: "I’ve eaten a lot of European cuisines that I hadn’t tried because in the States I was stuck with the same things; Mexican food and traditional American food like barbecues, hot dogs, hamburgers and pizza, but here I can eat sushi, Asian Food, Indian food, and I’m eating more seafood in general." Clint sounds a little like a dumbass with a quote like that one. First of all, none of those cuisines he mentions are European, and secondly if you live in a city like Boston for more than a few years and can't find those things to eat, along with a whole lot more, then you just weren't looking my friend.

American Freddy Adu updated his blog earlier this week and gives us all an update on his new life at Benfica in Portugal. He has not been in game day rosters for the first team since they got a new coach, but he seems to be genuinely excited the future and not frustrated by his lack of chances. Maybe he will get in to some reserve matches soon and give us more info. Not bad reading, and its good to read something seeing as most American journalists seem to have already forgotten about him. Mexico had been scheduled to play China on October 17 in LA. But China has been replaced by Guatemala. Maybe China had a previous deal in place for Spanish language TV broadcast rights that Mexico could not come to terms with?

Several of our Americans played in UEFA Cup (first leg) matches last night. Let's check in on 'em shall we:
-Michael Bradley - Heerenveen - Big Mike had a huge night scoring two goals and leading his team to a 5-3 win over Helsingborg. Bradley started and went the distance, netted his teams 1st and 5th tallies, but also followed the trend he has started with the USA by committing a foul in the box that led to a PK goal.
-Danny Calliff - Aalborg - started as always and played the full 90 in his teams promising 2-2 away draw at Sampdoria.
-Charlie Davis - Hammarby - did not dress as his team beat Braga 2-1.
-Brad Friedel - Blackburn - played the entire match as usual in the goal as they went to Greek team Larissa and lost 2-0.
-Tim Howard - Everton - did not dress for the game as they gave up an away goal to Ukraine team Metalist Kharkiv in a 1-1 draw.
-Oguchi Onyewu - Standard Liege - they went to Zenit is St Petersburg Russia and got run off the field 3-0. Gooch started and played 90 collecting a Yellow Card for his efforts. Does not look good for the second leg comeback.
